then someone offered me a 2nd hand
Matt Francis truck.  From the description it looks like a fully modified
racing version with exotic materials instead of plain old plastics.  Anyone
know what i should offer for one?

What's a Matt Francis truck?  FWIW - I think Doc runs a Sportwerks Mayhem
and never says much about shoddy build quality etc.

its one of these
http://www.helgerracing.com/j1teamlosi/j1cars/j1kitpages/j1xxxtfrancis.html
from wot i can tell its a team losi version of the sports works.  called an
xxxT.  a standard one goes for £200.  Matt francis is one that pro racer has
modded with the usual carbon fibre and titanium 'hop ups'.  So do i get a
new sportwerks for £139 or a 2nd hand francis.
I'm looking for a tarmac grass and gravel that at a pinch could go round a
carpet track.  Basically need to practice whereever i can but don't want to
damage the car.  Its ride height is so low that imperfections in tarmac
outside my house were enough the make it bounce out of control.  That's
basically cos when they laid the cable for TV they didn't bury very deep so
there are light bumps every 10 meters going across the road and one long
bump going the length of our road.  Once i've put carpet racing tyres on and
tuned the suspension getting a substantial whack outside would probably ruin
it.  It also means i can hopefully have a spare machine to run round
practice laps if i damage my main vehicle.

I'd go for the 2nd hand modded one if I knew it was a good runner and wasn't
about to crap out.  As it's a stadium truck I'm surprised it has ground
clearance issues on roads.

I personally wouldn't buy the Matt Francis for running as a on road vehicle.
I've got a 1/18 Mini T Pro which is a just a scaled down XXXT and it handles
pretty crap on the road, even with the CF chassis, alloy suspension arms,
titanium turn buckles, BL 8000kv motor, 3S Li-Po's and foam on road tyres.
Its great in a straight line as long as I keep the wheels on the ground.  It
also probably doesn't help trying to turn it at 60+ kph.  At slow speeds it
suffers greatly from under steering with the power on and then instantly
over steers with the power off.  Correcting it is impossible, maybe I need
one of the D-box's from HPI for it, but trying to make a 2wd truck that was
made to have long suspension travel for use off road just doesn't work very
well on road.

If you want something that can be run both indoors and outdoors why not look
at a Tamiya Impreza TL01, TT01 or similar in kit form.  This will give you
the opportunity to build a car and help you understand the workings of these
things a little better.  The other thing is that parts and hop-ups are
extremely cheap and readily available for most Tamiya cars.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Yeah, I beat the piss out of it (Mayhem ST) and it just keeps asking for
more.  I'd say it's actually more durable than the Savage.  Over 6 gallons
or so I've replaced 2 front steering knuckles and 1 rear a-arm.  That's it.

apparently the sportwerks have adjustable crystals.  19 turn motor. the guy
selling the matt francis says its only a rolling chassis. but still wants
£125 for it.

Just get a DuraTrax Evader ST  (Losi Clone)
They are easy to find, relatively tough, and cheap to work with.
You can probably find one already hopped up with lots of extras pretty cheap
on the Bay.
As far as new stock goes..just plan on immediately changing out the steering
servo.

Alot of the parts are interchangable between the electric and the nitro
version...hence I have been pondering about getting a nitro version as well.
=)
