No the STS drove me insane with it's random tunes, so I explained the
situation to someone, who I think thought I just didn't know what I was
doing and it was just me being crap, who I then sold it to :-)   I explained
fully that I couldn't get it to hold a tune - and he still wanted it - to be
fair, it probably just needed sealing or summet - who knows, but when I buy
a new engine I don't expect to have to strip it down and seal it up myself
to cover up the factories deficiencys.  I ain't buying motors anymore ha!

Stock Traxxas T/Emaxx wheels with Proline Mulcher (I Think?) tyres.

Bingo :-)  Stock Maxx wheels are pretty much the strongest wheels on the
market, and Mulchers offer amazing grip in any situation.  Highly
recommended.

Cheers dude, I can't take credit for modding this one though, it came like
that :-)  Well except for the wheels and tyres, that was all me ha.

Nice!  Your trucks are all too low for me though, need some ground clearance
:)

Are those blue a-arms made of metal??  they look plastic from the photos...

Btw, your K46, when you ahve the plug out, do you have any pinch at all???
My K46 is pretty young in that it hasn't done many hours use.  When I took
the plug out yesterday to un-gum it (was sitting for a couple of months) you
could turn the crank around with very little resistance.  Once you put the
plug in you get some compression, but I'm thinking that'll go when the
sleeve heats up.  Its just weird that its puked allready, but then again,
I've never had much faith in HPI engines...

The engine in my Inferno (Picco .21) which probably has twice the fuel
through it has craploads of pinch and its actually bloody hard to turn over
by hand with the plug in.

When you loosen or remove the plug..you are letting the majority of
"compression" escape or releasing it's resistance..
They all turn over easy with the plug out..atleast everyone I have had did.
It should be fairly resistant or hard to turn with the plug installed.

I'm mainly talking about the pinch, you should still feel the pinch with the
plug out.  My K46 turns over with very VERY little resistance with the plug
out.  Certainly a LOT less than my picco, which has had a lot more use...

The K46 is an ABC engine (like most) so the piston and sleeve expand at
different rates.  The sleeve expands quicker than the piston and becuase of
this I think that my engine is toast, since there is bugger all pinch cold,
hot would give even less...

How did it run before you stored it?...
If it did fine..I would give it atleast another shot to be sure it is toast.
I know that they can "feel" real loose without a plug and header and pipe on
them.

Well it *ran* before I stored it :)

But for its whole life its been hard to get a nice tune.  If I tune it for
performance (and going by all my other big block nitros) I cant get the
temps below 150deg C.  If I tune it for max temp of 130-140dec C its a
blubbering smoke machine.

Also when I last had the exhaust off, I noticed the piston had some marks on
it, only very slightly, but thats the first engine I've had with marks like
that.  No idea how dirt got in there as its *allways* run the factory
cleaner with cable ties holding it down.

A few reasons why I think its a bit stuffed.   Whats got me beat is its
never been right and I bought it new, a dud maybe?

I'm certainly going to try a new plug first, but if I still cant get it to
hold a tune and idle properly, shes toast and then the fun starts, see how
many revs I can get it to before the con rod lets go :)  I've also got an
old HPI .12 and its also got bugger all pinch so maybe HPI engines just dont
have as much as others...

Yeah, I would tune it for just under max performance at just under 1/2 tank
full (if using a Savage standard fuel tank)..and let her rip!
I would also let it go as far as 154C (roughly 310*) at the bottom of the
fuel tank.
Worst senario.. "see how many revs I can get it to before the con rod lets
go" ...as you say.
Or, just go ahead sell it off for a few $.
Good Luck!

Yep, thats how I tuned it last time and it was running pretty well.  I went
to take her out for a run last night but it started raining *just* as I got
ready to fire it up, DOH!!

Its a pearler day today and unlikely to rain so tonight I will try again :)

Well it was the plug, I plopped (yet) another number 8 in there and away she
went, quick tune and I got her running pretty well at 120degC with half a
tank of fuel.  Lots of smoke though so I reckon it needs leaning out, but
that'll bring me back up to 140-150degC.  I suppose I could get a nova head
for this engine which would a) help the temps and b) stop it from being so
blubery rich as I could lean it out further.   (and c) will stop it from
eating so many damn plugs!)

Hmmmmm, tempting, and cheap too.

Those STS engines are damn cheap (100USD), is that cause they are crap?  :)

The clutch springs made a shitload of difference though, talk about launch
central!!

Excellent!
Atleast you have awhile before you will need a new power plant.
A few hours didn't seem too long for an HPI motor to me.
Never had the 4.6...but the 4.1's seem pretty decent.
(Doc has proved that!)
Try tuning her in about 130C-135C but no more if your gonna fork out for the
Nova head.
Make it last as long as possible while maintaining a fun factor.

Couldn't tell you on the STS motors yet..but my friend just bought a .30 for
his buggy..we'll see how it goes!

Same here, its simple not enough time to kill an ABC engine...

Well thats the thing, I cant get it tuned in to 130-135C without it being a
useless blubbering smoke machine.  *But* I have just placed an order for a
nova head to suit a K46.  I'm hoping that it will allow me to tune it for
performance, while still holding the temps under 140C.  OTOH, if the motor
pukes shortly, I'll need to replace it with another K46 to get my moneys
worth on the head...  Fingers are crossed :)

The next thing I do however is put the polished pipe on, hopefully it'll
quieten it down a bit...

I like to be able to corner at WOT :-)  Also, one of things any Revo boy
will you tell you is that you should let it bottom out a little, otherwise
the shocks will break hehe!   The Sav, I like that bottoming out because
then the Ti sparks on stuff!

Blue plastic RPM arms - lifttime warranty because they're unbreakable ;-)
You've heard of RPM stuff before surely?

I dunno, I'll take a look later, but to be fair, mine swallowed a lot of
sand one day so probably not hehe :-)

LOL, cornering in my Savage is a bit dodge at high speed I must say :)

Thats true, but anyway, I've pretty much decided on a new motor, just have
to see how it all pans out.  have to wait a week before the auction ends
anyway...
