The other day I took both the Nitro trucks out for a little play to give
some family visitors a hack for few hours. Both the Tmaxx and the Savage
ran continuously for about 90 minutes without being shut off.
My brother who's a bit of a rev head and owns several motor bikes and my
cousin who's a doctor and leads a pretty boring life had a absolute blast, I
on the other hand had the fun task of chasing after them every time they
turn one of the trucks over.
My brother also noted that the Savage was incredibly easy to drive with its
awesome brakes, acceleration and handling. He even said that hitting the
jump at speed it was still easy to control. He said the Tmaxx was a toy in
comparison with sluggish acceleration, poor steering and very unresponsive
handle characteristics.
So the Tmaxx is getting a new tuned pipe, some better suspension and new
lighter wheels and tyres in the next few weeks. Got to make use of the
wheelie bar on the back and I desperately need one on the Savage. I also
need a new body for the Savage as it landed on the roof a few to many times
and the rear end is pretty stuffed after all the wheelies.
Anyway I get home to clean the trucks up before I put them back on the shelf
and the rotor start in the Savage wasn't kicking over the motor. It would
ever 10 or 20 seconds and only for a few turns, not long enough to start it.
I checked the temps on both trucks through out the play session and the
Savage still didn't get over 240*F, so I don't think I cooked anything. The
rotor start has only been on the truck for about 2 ltrs so I would hope that
its not fubar already.
The bloody pull start lasted longer.
So can anyone offer any advice before I pluck the motor out to have a look
this weekend. Stuffed one-way maybe??
Cheers

So does it turn the motor over at all or does it turn it over once, twice
then slip and spin??
Is there a clicking noise coming from the unit on the back of the engine?
(if so, broken tooth on one of the gears)

Its possible some oil got into the one way, but until you ahve it apart its
hard to tell. If it has got oil in there, clean it all up, whack it all
back together and crank it over again. I've had a rotostart for ages and
its been fine so far (fingers crossed).

Yeh it turns over once or twice then just spins, know noises like the gears
are broken.
Fingers crossed its just the oneway.
My Friggin thighs are still killing me from all the running and I really
gotta find a better way of shutting the motor off other than burning my
finger on the exhaust. I might have to put a exhaust deflector on it to
stop it burning me.
People at work think I've been smoking something.

You know,... it will cut off by itself when it runs out of fuel. =)

Yep, I no about both but I have never liked running my trucks out of fuel
and I am going to have to put a order in overseas for the safety engine stop
system that is going to cost me more in postage than for the item itself and
seeing how over seas postage seems to be taking forever at the moment. Last
package was sent on August 8 and got here Tuesday.
I'll see if my LHS has one and if they don't I'll get a crappy looking
exhaust deflector as it's only $5 and that'll save the fingers.

Get one from a guy called rcboyz (ebay seller), he sells them also and sends
global priority. If you get a few bits at the same time, shipping is very
reasonable, plus the parts are very cheap compared to locally.
I've gotten heaps off him and he allways sends quickly.
That or Tower...

The one way has oil in it. Clean it and she'll be good as :)

HPI make an engine shut off for the Savage, I have one fitted, its great,
there is a push button just next to the fuel tank, push it in with a bit of
gruff and the engine shuts off straight away. Its basically a plastic block
that jams the flywheel. No more burnt fingers! Cheap as too at around 5
bucks :)

Is the hand unit/shaft still turning?.. If so, it sounds like your oneway
bearing may need replacing(cracked or worn)..or...it's possible that the
backplate and one way shaft may need replacing(worn)..or..both. I have seen
a couple of oneways crack from use of the rotostart. Maybe, also check the
gears in the roto start.
I had a problem with the backplate and one way shaft wearing out with my
pullstart on the .25. The shaft/backplate simply wears out and allows fuel
to enter the pullstart or roto start, which can also cause the oneway to
slip.
The backplate and oneway shaft was fairly inexpensive, roughly $10 shipped. I
just got one from an Ofna Force and put on there... a 21,25,26,28 Force
backplate/shaft will work on an S-25.

If you have to replace the backplate, put a little RTV gasket/silicone along
the outer edge of the block where the backplate meets the block before
tightening it down.

Yup dude, slipping one way, no doubt in my mind. You might get away with
just giving it a really good clean with some carb cleaner or something, but
IME when they start to go, you may as well just replace them...

Definitely the one-way slipping.
I took the motor out this morning and also found the mounting bracket for
the spring on the pipe was snapped. Haven't pulled the bearing out yet
because I don't like my chances of getting one locally and I don't want
parts scattered all over the place for a few day or weeks. $33 ouch, I
might have to find one from a bearing supplier rather than OEM or I may just
have to put a overseas order in after all.
Anyone want a 11 week old puppy named Samson? He drives me crazy every
time I go near one of my RC cars, trucks or helicopters.

I'd clean it first, those one ways are useless with oil in them, including
new ones. Its not that much work to change it anyway, 4 screws once the
engine is out, easy as, 30 minute job tops including pulling the engine out
while having a beer :)

Thanks Dre for the heads up, that did the trick perfectly.
The better half thanks you as well but I told her I can spend the money on
something else now :-)

LOL, good stuff, I've had a lot of success cleaning them, the HPI ones I've
got seem to last HEAPS longer than others I've tried so far...
I'm hanging out for my Nova head to arrive, then I can put it and the
polished pipe I've got for it on and give it a BIG retune. I'm hoping the
head will lower the temps enough (so I can lean it out enough) to stop it
from being so smokey/blubberly.
