I presently own a Duratrax Evader electric buggy RTR which came with
the standard Futaba  AM radio. If I buy a car kit and have to purchase
a ESC and receiver separately, can I purchase a receiver which is the
exact frequency to put in the kit so I can use my Futaba radio with the
new kit.

When it comes to radio matters and R/C electronics, I know very little.

Can the frequency in my Futaba radio be easily changed by changing the
crystal?

>From reading, I know that the FM radios are preferable to AM and the
2.4 ghz radios are best.

Thanks for any advice.

I do believe futaba do a 27mhz am system receiver for £18.99.  Simply put
the reciever crystal into your new car and it will work or buy a new pair of
crystals.

Yes you could do that..or I would simply just buy another DuraTrax (Futaba)
or cheap radio.
They are a bit better than strictly standard AM 27Mhz which would only be 6
available channels(crystals).
Being they are AM 75Mhz. (alot more crystal choices)
You can find them pretty cheap, receiver and transmitter, on eBay.

Or for really cheap option for receiver and transmitter you could go with a
strictly AM 27Mhz setup..like that are easily available from Ofna kits

Hi Folks,
new to the R/C scene but not to modelmaking I recently
acquired two r/c 'toys' which need some attention, one is an unused BMW
Z4 with no transmitter and the other a quite quick Subaru with a
steering problem which is fixable when I have time to strip it all down.
My first job is to get the Z4 sorted for my grandson and although I have
spare 27Mhz transmitters the receiver is an unknown quantity as I have
no idea what 27 Mhz band frequency it is on and there is no crystal on
the board only a pot, if I switch the transmitter on with one of the
sticks wedged over to provide a signal can the pot be retuned to accept
the signal? is it possible to replace the pot with a crystal?.
The Impreza is quite fast for an electric and fairly well made with a
lightweight body shell so may keep that one to play with myself once it
is sorted,

                                 best regards,                 Terry

i said to someone else how about a new futuaba receiver for £18.99 from
www.hurricanemodels.co.uk

you might also want to find the original manufacturer of the car.

Hi Ian,
the usual 'made in China' and no manufacturers name
anywhere on chassis, PCB or anywhere else, I scrapped a 1:12 scale Mini
few months ago so have a transmitter with a 27.145 crystal in it so all
I need to do is get the Z4 tuned into it, if all else fails I can doctor
the Mini PCB and hope it will drive the motor etc which it should do I
think.
The Mini decided to test some concrete for density one day and totalled
the front end and I couldnt find spares to repair it so it became an
organ donor to other projects,

                         regards,      Terry

I would have checked the box it came in.  i know someone who races 12 scale
minis,  he has an xray and a corally.  spares are hard to come by for the
xray but he found the xray t1 05 10 scale touring car chassis did rather
well.

No box I am afraid, everyone around here has gone nitro-mad so electrics
are old news and I can pick good quality cars up for a song right now
but a problem  with most of them is they have been robbed of some of the
electrics like servo's and such, need a speed controller for a 1:12
Mitsubishi Lancer which will need to be on the small side to get into
the chassis,

                                   regards,              Terry

servos are easy.  check hurricane again.  prices start at 8.99 i think.
also www.modelsinmotion.co.uk
have a very good easy to navigate site.
For electric cars an electronic speed controller would be easy.  very small
would be the lrp water proof one.  I have one in my 1:18 car.  Nitro cars
usually have a mechanical one with a servo operating the throttle.
