A book i read recently actually mentioned connecting to the steering so that
when turning the indicators came on.  This was for tamiya trucks and
specialist stuff.

found the reference in "the complete book of radio controlled models" by
chris ellis.  Chapter on 1:24 scale trucks - lorries.  Tamiya and Wedico.
The lights are controlled by a printed circuit board.  I went into a hobby
shop who suggested i get a 9volt cell and get some leds from maplins
electronics.
i also saw reference to light kits in cml catalogue.page 140.

Need a extra channel, servo and a switch that closes on one press, opens
when pressed again, closes on the next press etc. Then just mount.
