GTD - 05 Oct 2007 02:02 GMT What is up with all the auctions that the high bidder is named something like y***z, or any other combination of a letter, three asterisk, then another letter? Many times, if you see an auction with say 10 bids, and the high bidder is one of those, the bid history has several other combinations of the same scheme in it, like this one:
http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&item=130157926581
There's only two in that one, I've found others with 6, 8, even 10, but don't want to post them since they're not ended yet. Any idea what gives? Thanks, Greg.

Have you tried to create a new account on ebay recently? You have a few nicknames in mind and you put in your first choice and its taken, you try your next one and that's taken too, you keep trying names and their all taken so you just put in anything. I think this is what has happened with these people.
This also happens on a lot of the forums, IRC and EA Games servers.

Yea, , but 6 different people, , all with a letter, three asterisks, then another letter, , all bidding on the same item, and nobody else? Just too much of a coincidence for me to believe.

I now realise I should not have assumed you Googled your question before posting on the forums, that would have been to simple. :)

Bid safely: eBay limits how your bid history information is displayed by using anonymous names. When the highest bid, reserve or Buy It Now price on an item reaches or exceeds a certain level, other members cannot view your member-specific information-such as your User ID-on the Bid History page. Your complete User ID is shown to the seller of this item only. Bidders are assigned anonymous names, such as a***b. These anonymous names are used consistently across all auctions that exceed a certain level. Regardless of the current high bid, when the reserve or Buy It Now price is initially set at or above $200.00, your User ID will appear as an anonymous name throughout the duration of the auction, even if the seller lowers the price.
Note: Anonymous names may appear more than once in the bid history and may represent different bidders from different auctions.

Actually I did, but I didn't think to put something like a***b in there. .. That's cool, I was beginning to think it was a scam or something. . . Thanks for pointing that out.

I just put in "Ebay Names with a asterix" it came up with the ebay forum which had a link to the info.
Interestingly enough I haven't seen this before on the Australia version of ebay so it was all new info to me.
Seems like a good idea to hide the highest bidders id on sales above $200. I guess its their way of stopping other people like friends or family from seeing what you buy on ebay.
There have been a few stories on the current affair programs here recently about people spying on their friends and family. Trying to create hassles with their family members like husbands bidding on something and their wives friends telling their wife about it.
