I have a large parking lot available to me to use for R/C racing.  How can
I set up a temporary track for this cheaply?  Thanks.

We use 3/4 inch PVC 10 foot lengths, "swimmie noodles" and homemade
sandbags:

http://pages.ripco.net/~kenji/strictlyrc/asphalt_layouts/photos/may2007/

The PVC is from a home center.

The noodles are one dollar each bought in bulk at a dollar store. they
are 4 feet long. I have about 70 of them.

Sandbags are made from ripstop dropcloth, ziploc bags, pea gravel, and
duct tape. You cut a 30 inch square piece of dropcloth. Fill a large
ziploc bag with pea  gravel. Place the filled ziploc bag onto the cutout
piece of dropcloth and fold it over. Wrap it with duct tape.

You place the sandbags on top of the track barrier where you need it to
be held down. Make sure the bag's edges don't hang into the driving area.

We take a 110 foot by about 50 foot area. It gets swept with two push
brooms. We lay our track out. Put up the EZ-UP, run power to the EZ-UP.
We use a 3.5 gallon bugsprayer, the handpump kind. I use dollar store
pancake syrup. One bottle of syrup to 3 gallons of warm water. We then
spray the concoction in all the turns.

All of the above get's stored in an old church bus that stays on the lot.

We use a computer with the I-LapRC Timing System, and we use ALycat race
software.

From the time we pull up in the parking lot and break out the brooms
until the time we are ready to race is about 2.5 hours.

Provides better traction... some tracks use cheap grape soda (diluted) for
the same reason - makes everything sticky!

Why the syrup?

It's only a buck and four of them do our whole track.

It's alot of corn syrup for a dollar.

It also seems to work better than 3 liter bottles of pop mixed with
water.

Better at doing what?  What is the purpose of the pop or syrup?

This was answered 20 minutes after you first asked by !bungle.

The pop or syrup or anything else like that is applied to the track for
extra traction.

HTH

Is !bungle KK or Kenji?  I read and reread all the posts, but did not see
an answer or bungle.

If you build a track on a parking lot there's lots of dust and
particles. Even after sweeping and/or pressure washing it.

Spraying a sugar water mixture on the road course gives you traction.
Without it the track has inconsistencies. Cars will spin out with the
rear ends swinging around. The light coating of sugar water is a night
and day kind of difference. After spraying and letting it dry, cars hook
up.

For just bashing no compound is just fine, but for racing you'll need to
spray.

We even use traction compound on our tires even after spraying the track.
