I bought an Integy 48T steel spur gear to replace the stock plastic
ones I keep stripping, problem is the old one is much wider in the
center due to the bushing which the new one does not need. So now the
spring and nut that holds it on is too short to hold the gear in
place. Anybody have this problem?

If the back of the spur gear is melted is beacuse spur clutch is too loose!

If gear melted, slipper clutch is set to tight!

The plastic gear is there to protect your vehicles tansmission.

If gear ratio is too long cluch bell will rub causing overheating and thus
melting your spur gear

The manual says tighten the nut 2 and a half turns in. <<-- Works well
providing gear ratio is set properly
