Thanks :O)

ok I have a trinity x-star which I understand is quite an old stock motor. I
don't know much about it tho because it is from a car I got off ebay
(schumacher fireblade usa).

Anyway I was wondering how it compares to other motors. I mean it does seem
faster than my friends tamiya (with the standard 540) but I thought this was
meant to be a 27t too so I don't see why it is so much faster.

so compared to for example a 17 quad how much slower would mine be compared
to it?

any extra info about this motor would be greatly appreciated too.

Thanks in advance,

Kinda why my wifes 4cylinder Lancer can wipe the floor with my 6cyl chevy.
The ol' mabuchi "silver can" stock motor is a classic study in inefficency. A properly
designed 27turn motor with balanced & lightened armature, Quality brushes, and really good
magnets will run noticeably better than a mabuchi ( and probably my chevy...)

And your old (or any, for that matter) stock motor will be much slower than a 17 turn.
Fewer turns, faster motor, shorter battery life.

BTW, (Winds vs Turns) more windss really only adds a flywheel effect. A 17 turn single is
fast and accelerates very fast. A 17 turn quad is fast, but accelerates slower because it
has to spool up the extra weight of the additional winds.

As long as your brushes are good and your commutator is clean, your 'stocker' should be
fine.
Its not a bad idea though to get a cheapo 17-23 turn mod motor for bashing around and
experimenting.

I've always wondered why the higher wind motors had better "top end".  Is it
because the windings are more dense and are packed against the poles better?

If i had to guess (and i do...)
id say it was more of an efficiency thing.
guessing here: more turns creates a stronger field - both in a motor and in a generator.
When a motor spools up, the coils passing through the mags act as a generator - trying to
force current the opposite way. Thats why motors are strongest at 0rpm. Theres no reverse
current fighting it yet. It also limits the speed. when the reverse current approaches the
input current, the motor approaches a steady state.
lower turn motors have to be going faster before the reverse current approaches the input,
hence, they go faster.

Sooo, i theorize that because they have fewer turns, they are generally not as torquey.
Anybody care to discuss? Theres usually lotsa folks here that really understand this crap,
but its been quiet lately. Maybe somebody will pop back in...

Here's the thread from when we discussed this back in '99, when Tom Younger
and Elvo were around:

Re-reading it though, I can't see any clear conclusions... maybe someone
would like to spend more time than I'm prepared to, and post a summary...

HTH!

D'oh, forgot about tinyurl (or www.makeashorterlink.com).  That's what
comes of trying to cook dinner and post to Usenet at the same time...

Thanks!

is that meant to launch a webpage or an ICBM?  ;)
