Looking to get a 1/8 nitro buggy just for backyard fun and informal
"racing".

Looking for something durable, has a lot of upgrades available, but
also has "normal" priced replacement parts, nothing that's gonna kill
me if I break an arm, etc.

I am thinking:

Ofna MBX Pro 9.5 right now, along with possibly a Hyper 7 PBS, but I
think the Hyper is more for racing.

Any other ideas?  My "LHS" is towerhobbies.com pretty much, I usually
wait until I need a bunch of stuff then just order.

Duratrax Axis. i bought a used wreck on ebay a month ago and love it.
lotsa hopups - none are likely worthwhile, except possibly a meaner engine. Dont get me
wrong, the torq 21 is fine, but many other engines have even more power...8)
damaged the car once in a near-full speed curb kiss. broke $10 worth of parts.

My first buggy was a new Axis and I thought it was great.  Then, I
bought a used MBX4 with an engine and radio for $275.  The MBX4 is so
much better it isn't even in the same category.  I worked on the Axis
every time I took it out.  Things fell off, things broke.  It pulls
under acceleration because the steering is sloppy and not bearing
supported.  The diff housings are made of soft plastic and setting gear
mesh is impossible.  They are also not sealed, so you cannot tune them
using silicone oil, which is a must to make the buggy accelerate
optimally.

I haven't touched the MBX4 and have run it many times.  It handles so
much better and the quality and tuneability is night and day between the
two.  I'd spring for a used Kyosho MP7.5 or MBX4 via E-Bay or other
source instead of getting an Axis.  My $.02.

The Ofna may also be a good buggy.  I know it's made in China like the
Axis, so YMMV.  I did see the XTM Exterminator RTR Deluxe up close and
personal and it looks great (also made in China).  Any opinions from
owners?

Good luck with whatever you decide.
