Well, if you go with Nikko, then you have to realize that if you break it
you might as well trash it.....trying to get parts for it will be difficult.
You might want to go with something like this. It is more durable and has
the Stress Tech warranty to backup most of the plastic parts for a full
year. Lots easier to get parts for as well.

Nine years old is pretty mature for RC cars. Once he gets over the
initial learning curve, he'll probably surprise you with his driving
skill. Heck, I've seen kids that age racing at the track. Sometimes
they drive better than the adults.
Anyway, I think the Traxxas Stampede is a great choice. The motor that
comes with it is fast, but not racing fast. All the parts are
replaceable, and you can get a nice RTR package. Just glue the tires
and add batteries and charger.

Why not go monster truck?

Curbs will cause damage but all hobby class models are rebuildable. BTW,
he'll hit curbs no matter how fast it goes (I know I do!)
>Should I look at a nikko
I wouldn't.
Many of the big hobby-class manufacturers have a 2wd, 540-powered
monster truck models around $150 or so. Much cheaper in the long run.
And since you already have chargers for your e-planes you won't have
to splurge on that.

My son got into electric racing 3 years
ago (he was 7 then) with an HPI RS4 MT. He ran the truck for a little over
2 years before we got him a nitro touring car. If your interested, I'm
getting ready to sell his truck. I just happen to see your post and thought
I'd see if you're interested before it goes on e-bay.
Truck is ready to run & setup for asphalt racing, but easily converted back
for dirt racing or bashing. Hop ups include: full ball bearings, Integy
11x2 motor, graphite chassis brace, HPI heat sink motor plate, HPI
universals (all 4), HPI aluminum purple turnbuckles, RPM ball ends, Proline
Street Hawg tires mounted on RPM rims, power pole connectors for motor, and
Dean's plugs for batteries. Body has some minor scratches, but overall in
good used condition.
Spare parts include: several control arms, steering knuckles, steering
blocks, multiple pinion gears (19,20,21,22,24,25,26,27,28,30,31,32,33,34-
some aluminum, some steel), following spurs- 83,87,90,96, original
dogbones, full set of HPI purple, black, & lt blue springs, HPI dirt tires
mounted on HPI rims, HPI street tires mounted on HPI rims (harder compound
than the Street Hawgs), NEW HPI front belt, and NEW HPI rear belt. HPI
manual also included.
Electronics include: Futaba Magnum Sport AM radio (lock on bat door broken,
but easily held in place with tape. Does not effect performance & really
not cosmetically ugly) & rx (on ch 90), Novak Super Rooster speed control,
futaba 3003 standard servo, and 2 Sanyo 3000 HV bat packs with Racer's
Choice battery case. The bat packs are about 10 months old, but he only ran
them about 6-8 runs each before he stopped running the truck. I'll also
throw in a Trinity D4 9x2 motor, but the comm. needs to be turned.
Like I said he ran the truck, but I kept it maintained, and it's in very
good shape. I'm going to put it on ebay for $300 + shipping, but if you
want it, I'll go $275 + shipping. You can check out my feedback on ebay and
ask around on some of the RC boards about me....I go by "tekrsq". Also, I
can send you pics if you like. Email me at tekrsq@comcast.net.
