Are there any print magazines dedicated to RC cars only (not boats,
planes, helicopters, etc.)?
Rick Russell - 05 Dec 2003 19:13 GMT
Four that I know of:

RC Car Action
(oldest and largest)

RC Car
(good magazine, but small)

RC Driver
(new magazine, similar to RCCA)

Xtreme RC
(scantily clad women and RC)

And in the UK: Racer, and Radio Race Car (RRCi).

Got my free sample.  Nice magazine!!
And there's a Christmas special for $16.

It really got me drooling.  I wish they'd give prices in their
reviews.  I was dying to know how much that Monster GT costs, but had
to wait to get home and check online.  :-)

Thanks for the tips...I'm buying this mag.

Just check the adds in the magazine there are usually 3-4 places that I
see MGT.

Thanks!

I've emailed each of them, and they're sending me free samples so I
can decide.

RCX is run by RC Car Action; the magazines on the right are all from
Air Age publishing, the publisher of RCCA.

They are good magazines (particularly if you are in to touring cars or
nitro vehicles), but they are generally similar to RC Car Action. Same
writing style, same advertisers, etc.

Since I'm not into nitro or touring cars, I don't read the other
magazines :-)

Of the non-RCCA magazines out there, I think that RC Driver has the
most competitive presentation (based on just 1 issue, since it's new),
while RC Car has the densest ratio of RC content to advertising. But,
RC Car is a smaller magazine.

On the other hand, RC Driver is bimonthly and RC Car is monthly. So
you get two RC Cars for each RC Driver.

Addendum:

RC Driver has already upped the ante by also going monthly. They did it
because the intial response to their magazine was rather good... and I'm
very happy for them. We are all better off with some new blood.

I personally have only one more comment- "Extreme R/C Magazine" is a pile of
poorly-written sexist crap. Since they can't spell OR use a spell-checker
properly, they have no reason to publish any text. As far as using female
figures from the entertainment industry to rate products- for cryin' out
loud! Maybe they should just sell an adult magazine with naked celebrities
showing off various R/C vehicles.

Oh-yeah, one more thing: Do NOT buy the "Buyer's Guide" that R/C Car Action
will soon be releasing. You will be paying an exorbitant amount for what is
basically pure advertising. You'd be MUCH better off with a Towerhobbies
catalog, even if you never order from them. At least you will have a better
idea of what the going prices are on the newest products!

Thanks for letting me vent,

I beg to differ on your opinion on x-treme rc. yeah they have half naked
women sometimes but they are catering to a particular audience that maybe
does not have a 13 yearold running around. personally I think they have the
best reviews for cars by far. they give you in-depth specs for everything -
speed, accl, clear pics. if you homers were to subtract the women it would
be by far the best when it comes to explaining rc's analytically.

Is R/C Driver much different than R/C Action. My RC Action expires in
April & I was wondering about getting a RC Driver subscription since
it's less expensive. I like RCA just fine but might try something else
if it's a little different. Thanks for any thoughts. Mr. Darian Rachal

Darian, I think you'd be happy with either. I've read every RC magazine
released in the states for a few years now and I'm going with RC Driver...

RC NITRO and RC Car Action share many of the same articles; word for
word.
RC Driver has a bunch of guys that use to work for RC Car Action.  This
might be why they read alike.

So what's wrong with trying to carve out a different market share?  Let the
dollars speak for themselves.

Try explaining that to your wife, or child, and you'll see what's
wrong with it :-)
