I picked up an older Novak Tempest T-4 ESC. The manual for it says it
can be used with any turn motor. Being that it is older it isn't a one
touch setup.
Newer ESC's are of course one touch.
Is there any advantage to using a newer ESC over an older model if we
aren't racing A mains?

Well, if the guys you race with aren't using the very best of
everything, then I wouldn't worry about it much. One thing though, you
said it's a Tempest T-4, but that's two different ESC's, the Tempest
is a newer ESC with the One-Touch setup button, while the T-4 is MUCH
older & has two adjustment pots to set it up to your radio. If you're
dealing with a T-4, then you might still have to worry about what
motor you run with it, some extremely hot winds of today's mods might
still be too much for it, & its internal "On" resistance will be
noticably higher than that of newer ESC's(like the Tempest), so you
may notice your car has less "punch" off the line & out of corners
than with newer ones with lower internal resistance......:)
