How many times to recharge a battery in one day?

As I pour over all the info I can find, I've come across people
mentioning that the higher end battery packs can be recharged 2 or
even 3 times per day.

I didn't realize this was an issue.  I thought if I bought, say, 4
packs and a twin charger, I could charge up all 4, run them, and
always have two of them on the charger while running the others.

What's the scoop?  Is it just a mater of cooling them down before
recharging them?

Its a matter of letting the batteries stabilize before you recharge them,
which takes longer than the cool-down phase.  But if you do choose to charge
them they will still work.  They'll just crap out after a year instead of
lasting three.  Those are just rough numbers.

So then how long do you wait for them to stabilize?
Is that something that the charger will detect and indicate?
I think I'm getting the Dynamite Twin Peak charger for Christmas.

I just want to make sure I'm set for hours (not minutes) of action.

If you want hours of action bear in mind that any motor will have it's
limits and that with extended run times expecially if the motor is
getting hot you're gonna wear the crap outta the brushes and the
commutator.

If you want hours of action have 4 3300's with your Twin Peak, charge
them all, use a small fan on them while charging to keep them cooler. As
you dump a battery let it cool under tha fan, then recharge it. As
another poster said you might not getyears outta the battery doing this
but you will have fun.

Thanks for the tips.

I remember about 10 years ago I was servicing a machine that builds
NiCad batteries down in Gainesville, Florida.

Thousands upon thousands of cells everywhere you looked.

If I'd only known then.....

Just as well.  If you still had those thousands of cells, they still would
be 10 year old cells.  :)

Received wisdom among those of us who race is that you should only run
nicads (1700s, 2000, 2400s) once a day - hence we have six or eight packs
of the damn things!  NiMH cells (3000s and 3300s) can be used twice a day,
and are reputed to perform better on the second run.

As has already been said, it's mostly about lifespan (and drop-off in
performance with age) of the packs.  To give you some idea, nearer the
beginning of this year (2003) I realised that some 2000s - which I'd been
racing two or three times a month on average since the beginning of 1999 -
were definitely 'past it' for racing, although would still be fine for
practice and/or bashing.  However, I can't say how much sooner they'd have
died if I'd run them more than once a day, because I didn't :-)

'Fraid not.

HTH a little,

You definitely need cool-down time after running and after
charging. The cells are hotter on the inside than the outside; even if
they seem only slightly warm on the outside, they may be very warm on
the inside.

Several times I've run my packs, taken them out of the truck, and
thought "hey, these seem pretty cool". Then I touch the metal terminal
on the end of the pack and -- yikes! -- they are much hotter than I
thought.

If you're not racing, feel free to charge and discharge them as many
times as you want in a day with cool-down time between use. The
charging issues only affect racing, where multiple charge/discharge
cycles cause the packs to get a little slower at the end of the day.

I just use a fan to cool the charger/batts and run the heck outta
them.  But then again I'm not a racer squid.
