Hi all, Ive got TB01 ford focus and wondered what you lot thought were the
first upgrade choices I should make. I have a 19 turn MRI motor with a
mechanical speed ctrl  fitted and also wondered what flavour ESC I should
get.

I thought about ordering from the states as pound is quite strong at the
moment. a Novatech super rooster is $124 over there and £124 over here, but
with the exchange rate it works out at £71 +P&P seems a good saving. Any
thoughts?

cheers

Depends. What are you going to do with the vehicle? Race or just bash?

I would like to bash really fast ;-)   no, really i would like to be able to
race it, It came fully ball raced so thats done an ESC would be nice. What
kind of ESC will have the same top speed as a mechanical one It really is
quite quick now I would hate to put a basic ESC on it and see it go slower,
does that ever happen in the real world?

Thanks again

Buy an ESC that will handle the motors you want to use in the car.

ESC's many times breakdown to these categories:

17turn-27 turn motors
15-27 turn
10 turn and up
no limit, or 5-6 turn and up

...of course in general terms the lower the motor limit allowed the more
expensive the ESC will be.

If I was going to do it all over I would go ahead and buy a brushless
system. Really fast speed capabilties with no maintenance. They are
about 200.00 US +, but looking back would be cheaper in the long run if
you are gonna stay in the hobby for a while.

Brushless is great, but check to see if it's legal where you want to race.
I have Novak Dually in my TC3 and think is a good ESC for stock and
sportsman classes.

Any ESC will be way better than any mechanical, providing it works and is
set up correctly.  If you're a beginner, just get a cheap one and buy
ballraces for all wheels, and better tyres, or different sets of tyres for
different surfaces.  In any racing if you have the wrong tyres on, then it
won't matter how good the kit is, it won't win.

Best true upgrade, for racing, is continual practice, not crashing, practice
and practice again  ... ;)
