The Christmas that Traxxas ruined

My only presents:
Traxxas electric Stampede, Dynamite Twin Peak charger, 2 Epic 3000's.

Of all things, the little two-cent antenna tube is only "hollow" about
halfway through, then it's solid plastic.

I even tried feeding stiff wire through it a little bit at a time.  No
use.  It's solid.

Thanks, Traxxas.  Bastards.

Man it's not worth all that. just wrap the wire on the outside of the Ant
tube and run on. Until you can get to the LHS anf get a tube. Merry
Christmas

Thanks.  Yeah, too much of a rant.  I was just really excited (for the
past month) to get the truck.

Anyway, I followed your advice.
The truck runs great, and the NiMH 3000MaH is DEFINITELY better than
the old 5-minute battery packs.

Well, it ran great until the wheel flew off and the nut got lost.  :-(

Leme guess... right rear wheel. Right?

No, left front.
Miraculously, I found the axle pin .  And Menard's had 4mm locknuts,
so I bought a bunch of those.

Torqued them down good, and made SURE that the nylon was gripping the
threads.

Went out again today, ran for about 15 minutes.  Same wheel popped
off, but this time the pin is hopelessly lost.  And no local hobby
shop.  I won't see new parts for a week.

I can't believe Traxxas can't give you some spares for things that can
get lost so easily.  How much would it have cost them?  A quarter?

The above statement is dumb.

You're trolling right?

Gotcha. It's just that an RC manufacturer couldn't possibly know what
parts a customer is gonna break regulalrly.

Actually Traxxas doesn't make any cars that are new designs.  They should be
able to tell from spare parts sales which ones are breaking.  That's not to
say it's their fault for breaking them, though.

your wheel should turn freely tightened down. your wheel bushings ma
have something in between them spacing them out too far. or your whee
is going too far down on the spindle and hitting the bushing. look a
the other side for a comparision

<grin> When I was new at this, the list of stuff I didn't break would have
been shorter.

don't let it get next to you man. be sure that your axle  nut is ver
tight. also make sure that the insert in the back of the wheel i
pressed all the way in, and it fits on the pin like the rest of th
wheels. one last thing. once you've put the wheel back on, make sur
that there are no cracks in the plastic insert and the pin doesn'
recess too far into the wheel. good luck

When I tightened it down all the way, the wheels had alot of friction,
and didn't turn freely.  So I backed the nut off just until the wheel
would turn freely.  Is that right, or should I leave them torqued all
the way down?

In my above post (which was called "dumb"), I wasn't expecting Traxxas
to ship the Stampede with spare shocks and servos or anything
ridiculous.  I'm talking about a couple of locknuts and axle pins.
Things that are total showstoppers when they fall off and become lost.

Especially when people get these things for Christmas, when all the
stores are closed.

Anyway, no big deal now.  I was able to chop some nails up and fashion
pins out of them, and the 4mm lock nuts were available at the hardware
store.

Now please, please, please, servo, don't break just yet.  Not another
$40 right now.  :-)

The big tires that come with the Stampede can cause a lot of
vibration, particularly running on smooth surfaces. I think the
shaking causes the wheel nuts to come off easier.

Also, make sure you have the tires on right. If the rear wheels are
further apart than the front wheels (so that the truck looks a little
bit like a tractor), then you've got the wheels backwards.

My Stampede kit had some of the worst QA I've ever seen -- parts were
poorly molded, many fasteners were missing, some were duplicated...

Still, it was a decent kit for $95.

Did you call Traxxas at 888-traxxas?  I know they were open all day on the
26th.

Probably closed on New Year's Day, but you should be able to get them
before/after that.
