Good evening all!
Just bought my son an E-maxx for the holidays.
So far so good but this weekend one of his 2400mAh batteries split its
plastic casing.
Battery seems OK. Is there a way to check it? Is this common?
He probably charged it 2 or 3 times over the weekend and I'm pretty sure
they were cooled down first.
How long should NiCads cool before a recharge?

Also...
Are there any good books on RC car/truck maintenance.
Want to get further details on things like shocks, motor cleaning etc.
Have 2 cars now and haven't really done this before.
(Other's a Rustler... also electric)

TIA

The only time the plastic shrink wrap "splits" is when the pack gets too hot
or the wrap gets old and crusty. (usually) If it's a heat problem you may
look into changing the gearing and check the drive train for drag. As long
as the bare cells aren't exposed you should be ok. You could always re-wrap
the pack with wrap from your LHS.

Just make sure none of the cells have leaked or exploded. You'll know when
you charge it next time.

I don't  think there is an agreeable time frame but but I say the cooler the
better.
(cooler = longer)

Most hobby shops sell books but i've found magazines to be much more
helpful, also you've got the whole internet at your disposal, plus us. Try
www.about.com for all the info you can handle on electric rc motors search
for the Motor Black Book.

The biggest problem with the plastic casing splitting is gettin
moisture into the batteries. If this has note been exposed to moisture
you can shrink wrap over the existing case or use a little duct tape o
it. I would not recommend taking the case off and replacing it unles
you have had experience in building battery sticks.
Hopefully the case split because of temperature changes tha
affected the plastic case and not from a cell expanding. If the shap
of the stick feels ok, then you are probably alright.
NiCads do not mind getting hot. NiMyd's do not like getting hot.
I will allow one stick to set and cool while running on another an
then set the 1st one into the charger while I run on the third. I allo
the NiCad to cool to where it is warm, not hot to the touch befor
recharging.
There are multiple sources for R/C cars. I use R/c Car Actio
magazine and information from poeple on this site. I also pick u
literature from Battery Plus shops on battery car
