Sorry sweetie. Her name is ".air" And i do love her. She's a bitch though...

Theres only so many times you can open a tower catalog before you start to notice the
airplanes. On a whim, i signed up for the .air newsgroup and happened upon a few dozen
"newbie questions". With a little research and their kind advice, i ordered a GWS
slowstick electric plane (horizon). Its a lot of fun. It wont nudge out my cars (7 of
them), but when the wind lets up, its a great change of pace. Challenging as hell though.
The slow stick has been crashed maybe 40 times so far. held up great. I recommend it.
Someday i'll get a boat and a chopper to round out my fleet.
Anybody else have other loves?

Yes............welcome to the club Mike and enjoy your flying, it certainly
is different from cars but just as much fun.
I have 3 boats, 3Choppers, 2 planes, 1 Hovercraft and a Tank but I still
enjoy the cars too.

I'm curious - what kind of hovercraft do you have???  My wife picked up
a hovercraft for me for Christmas, but it would get stuck on just about
anything and I ended up returning it.  I would really like to get
another hovercraft (if I can find one that works well!) but after doing
some searching I can't find anything that I really like.

Thanks!

The Hovercraft I have is an old SLEC kit...powered by a .40 Engine....I have
modified the top as it looked like an r/c lawnmower...!!!
I picked it up from my local model shop having seen it sat there for a few
months and got it for £20 including the engine ( a very fine russian MVVS 40
diesel I might add)...this engine is now in my largest plane with matched
tuned pipe and gives superb performance.

I have 2 choppers, 4 boats that are running and many others that need work
or building, 8 planes overhead <truth to tell all but 3 need radios, though-
I just like to build sailplanes too much> 6 planes that need to be built,
and way too many darn cars....

I've been in the hobby a little too long....

My main other interests are archery, offroading <Jeeps mainly>,
welding <see previous> and computers.

But work keeps me out of town so much most of my interests don't get
the attention I'd like to give them

I've been cheating on my B3 and TC3 with a Lite Machines LMH110 and a
Raptor30 (both are helicopters).  I'm thinking about getting a Great Planes
Ultra Sport this Spring.  By the way, if you think a plane is tough, wait
until you try a heli.  Now that's a challenge!!!

My first intro to RC was a 3 meter  (about a 6 ft. wingspan) powered glider.
It was fun to fly, but after a few crashes and re-builds, I decided to get
something that was already ON the ground, like a car/truck. Been hooked ever
since.
Now that I'm a little older, (and not so much wiser) I have been looking at
planes as well. I think I could re-learn and hopefully improve my flying
skills.
The problem is... now I got a wife.
First question would be:
"How much did THAT cost?"
She is pretty cool about my spending to feed my RC habit... except every time I
spend X-amount of $$ on R/C stuff... out comes the credit card and SHE feels
It's OK to go out and spend an equal or greater amount on herself.
How many sets of clothes, shoes, and jewelry does a woman need anyway???
I'm ashamed to admit it, but I have taken to hiding my RC expenses by paying
CASH at the LHS rather than ordering online. That way, there isn't a paper
trail for her to see.
It would be kinda hard to hide a 6-foot airplane from her. :-(

I am addicted, pray for me.
SamB - 28 Jan 2004 17:13 GMT
No wonder us Yanks don't get the metric system- I was sure 3 meters was a
little over 9 feet. :>)  I've recently purchased a couple of small slow park
flyers.  Quite a bit of fun.

OOps, you're right. The glider was a 2 meter... somewhere near 6 ft wingspan.
3 meters would be a real monster.
Anyway I had a lot of fun building, flying, crashing and re-building that
thing.
Sooner or later, it was gonna become too heavy to fly anymore, with the added
weight of all that glue. ;-)
MikeF - 30 Jan 2004 01:46 GMT
Lighter servos and Lipoly packs. My RC education took a dramatic turn when i started into
.air. An inexpensive GWS "nano" servo is smaller than a postage stamp, maybe $15 usd, and
15oz/inch
Lipolys have almost 4times the Mah per oz than Nimh, at only twice the price.

At this point im interested in where the two shall merge.

Whos gonna be driving Lipolys at the next ROAR nats?
Wanna talk about brushless? forget novak - go to the .air group. There are maybe 200
different brushless motor sizes and winds to suit you.

I'm in a situation like you with the expenses hehehehe.

With the RC Gliders, why not try one of those "flying wing" foam sloap
soarers. They go like stink and are almost indestructible.

Oh God,
Now I've counted them all. Been afraid to do that for some time...
Here we go:

1 Tank
29 RC cars/trucks of many styles
15 Aircraft of many styles
1 Nitro Airboat
2 Electric boats
1 Sailboat
About 10 unopened kits of many different styles

'Suppose now you all want photos, huh?

You must have an understanding wife, or no wife at all.
I have been racing 10th scale stadium trucks for several years so I have quite
a collection of them, and an inventory of parts that any hobby shop would envy.

I have 3 power boats too, 2 nitro and one electric... all screamin' fast.
I have a mini Z that I bought to race at a local track. I put every hop-up on
it known to man. At the last minute, the local guy decided not to build the
track, so, now I have a $250. mini-z that sits on the shelf.
I am in the process of hopping up a new Losi Mini-T. The local shop swears that
soon there will be enough Mini-T guys showing up at the local carpet track to
form a class to race.
If that doesnt happen, I'm gonna sell it.
I wanted a winter activity to do some racing and keep my skills sharp, but
there aren't enough Mini-T guys out there yet. Time will tell.
Guess I may go back to more skiing, and snow-boarding to keep busy this winter.
The balsa plane kits are very reasonably priced.
I'm afraid that if I start building a plane, the wife may just shoot me. She
knows from experience that the KIT is just the start of something bigger, and
VERY expensive.
I still have my 4-channel  aircraft radio though.
Dirtnap - 28 Jan 2004 20:56 GMT
Ya, I'm married. She is understanding, more so now that she decided
that she only wants to work part-time if at all.
She has a huge art area right next to mine.
We are both overflowing.
She has never been a "How much is that now?" kind of girl.
I pay for my habit mostly with side jobs, I used to race buggies
and trucks, now I build and repair a lot of stuff for racers and friends.
I don't fly like I used to, not a member of a club anymore, just the AMA.

Skied since i was three. Kids were born - havent skied since. Mark my words...

screw the kits. I want to build one too-eventually- but planes are different. A car you
KNOW you can drive. Parts are replaceable. Airplane kits are rarely more than a one-shot
deal. Thats why i got the Slowstick. She has taken a horrendous beating. Damage estimates
in the twentys of dollars. crashed maybe 40 times.
The balsa kits come later. Well after the "Learning Curve"
Anybody interested and i'll hook you up with links.

> I still have my 4-channel  aircraft radio though.

Perfect. That and your Nimh charger and your airborne for $130 depending on the batteries
you get.

Speaking of the Mini-T- what do you think of it? I was looking at it to
maybe take on the road <my job requires a lot of travel now>

Wierd how parallel things run:
I've been spending a lot of time with planes lately, myself. On and off over
the last 2 years I've been gone from the group, but more on than off.

Here's my latest : www.speedwing.net . The Mini speedwing. Also, grabbed a
36" wing from www.corndoghobbies.com , the Terni. Will be picking up a Zagi
now that the LHS has them as well.

LOTS of fun, and since they're foam, they bounce not break.
