I have the XR3 for my Emaxx, but I haven't found a way yet how to
engage first and alternatively 2nd gear to stay. Currently, I have to
push and hold the thumbswitch forward to keep first gear engaged, as
soon as I let go 2nd goes back in.

Is there any way to program or modify the XR3 so that either 1st and
2nd is engaged? The standard remote that comes with it has a click
switch.

Let me know.

Go to www.jrradios.com to download a free, full manual for your radio.

The short version is to change your 3rd channel function to 2-position mode,
with everything else at defaults.  It will disable the lap timer.

Actually you must set 2 settings.

AUX should be set to 2P

Then GBC should be set to 2P

there ya go.
