Stampede Differential

I've been having fun with my new Stampede, it's the perfect truck for my
dirt alley here. But I've noticed it's kind of slow accelerating. Granted
it's electric, but these things are supposed to do wicked wheelies and I
can't get the front tires off the ground. Do you think my differential might
need tightening?

No, the Stampede has a gear diff.
If there is something slipping, it's your slipper clutch.
That's the thing on the spur gear.
The owner's manual shows how to adjust it.

I tightened it like they said, I tightened it so I could hear the whine for
a couple feet. I guess you don't want to overtighten it because it's hard on
the transmission, although I haven't been jumping it though.

Also the owner's manual said if the motor is too hot to touch it's
overgeared. This motor is scorching hot! That could explain why it's slow
coming out of turns. It's got an 18 tooth pinion. Maybe I should try
something smaller since I'm just running it in a small area with lots of
turns.

Also I hope I'm charging my batteries enough. My digital charger tells me
it's put out 3000 mah even though it hasn't "peaked" yet. So I turn it off
because I figure any more is overcharging it.

Drop to a 16t (or even fewer) pinion and that should help both the heat and the
wheelie situation. Luckily pinions are cheeeep and easy to swap out.
Have fun!

The Stinger runs hot, I wouldn't worry about it. It's a great motor for an
RTR, but still sort of a throwaway. And unless you gear way down on the pinion
you won't get wheelies, it's just not powerful enough. Your first investment
should be a metal-geared servo like the Hitec 645-MG, you WILL kill the
servo in short order.  After that I'd pick up a Speed Gem Pro Titanite or
Serpentine motor. The speed gems line really shines in the Stampede.
Those two upgrades will really increase the fun-level of the Pede. There's
much more you can do, of course, but I'd start there.

There's a great Stampede forum at monster.traxxas.com

You can't tighten it; it's a gear differential. You can put heavier
grease it in to reduce the differential action.

The stock motor that comes with the Stampede is not very strong. Put a
hot motor in it, like a 17-turn single, and it will flip over from a
standstill.
