My daughter have expressed interest in starting out in this hobby, she
already has some cheaper (nikko) rc cars and trucks. I would like to
start her into nitro cars, she really wants a monster truck, but
anyway, my question is this...
What would be a good kit to start off with, car, radio the works,
we have at least $300 maybe $400 to start out with. What would any of
you recommend?

TMaxx

FWIW, in RC jargon, a "kit" is something you build from supplied parts,
and a "RTR" is just what it says...ready to run, no assembly required.

Me and my daughter have just started into R/C cars we have a couple of HPI
sprints ( 1/10 touring cars). I have to there great. Smooth to drive, spares
are cheap and hop ups a plenty. We got them from EBay one was £36 and the
other was £56 spent a bit more for radio gear. All together two Sprints cost
me about £120.
Weve joined a local club and realised the need for more batteries so thats a
few more quid. But still cheaper  buying new.

Not quite what you asked for I know but anyway good luck and I hope you
enjoy it as much as we do.

If it's gotta be nitro you could go with a *Maxx or Savage truck.
Those basically dominate the field.

Might also want to consider a big electric like the twin-motor E-Maxx.

I got my daughter a t-maxx. she loves it, because it is tough and she can drive
it on all types of terrain. We even painted a new body for it with flames just
the way she wanted it.
