PC power supply for R/C chargers

Some R/C geeks and I were wondering whether or not a salvaged PC power
supply would make a serviceable supply to feed R/C DC chargers.

I did a bit of surgery on an old 250w ATX power supply with excellent
(if ugly) results.  Aside from my sloppy electronics work, can anyone
think of a downside to recycling this way?

Old PC power supplies make pretty good charger power supplies.  I made one
about 4 years ago.  I put binding posts on it and utilized both the 5 and 12
volt outputs.  The 5 volt outputs can be useful for such things as a com
lathe or breaking in a motor.  I can get 10 amps out of the 12 volt side.
Normally you have to put a load across the 5 volt side (I do it internally
with resistors) to maximize the 12 volt current output.

Very interesting; I'll play with that a bit.

There is an excellent topic in the rcracechat forums on this very subject

Seems a 400W psu is what you need to get a decent charging rate.
