I am looking to purchase a gas powered remote control car, that is a 4x4.
Can anyone recommend a kit or something I can buy online? I want to see if
this hobby is for me, so I don't want to spend over $500. Thanks!

Alright man.

You're a few miles away from me. I'm in Portage Park.

Ever bash RC cars when you were younger?

Me and my two boys race. One of the places that we are regulars at is:

www.leisurehoursraceway.com

it's in Joliet. On a weekend you can make it there from your place in
about 30 minutes just down 294.

Here's a suggestion. this weekend is their twice yearly big race. Both
days. On Saturday it's stock electric only, Stadium trucks and buggies.
On Sunday it's mod only trucks, 2WD buggies and 4WD buggies. All
electric. Tons of the racers that will be there this weekend run
electric and gas. Stop by see us and I'll introduce you to a bunch of
racers and you can get their opinions. Many of them have 1/8th scale gas
buggies, monster 4WD drive and on road cars.

If you can't do it this weekend, you could stop there on a Saturday when
there's gas only racing. Ton's of vehicles and lot's of good advice.

Personally if I were you I wouldn't buy it online.I'd either shop at
Al's Hobby Shop in Elmhurst or Venture up in Wheeling. Using  LHS, yeah
you'd pay taxes, but you'd have all their support. They are both great
hobby shops. I'd direct you to Stanton on Milwaukee Ave. but Stanton
,after 49 years, just closed last month.

Are you wanting to end up racing or just bash around with it?

Thanks for the suggestions! I might actually go there on Sunday... I just
want to bash around, maybe eventually race. I bought a gas racer in Japan
(when I lived there) but it broke, and the instructions are in Japanese. So
I gave it to my uncle. Now I miss it. I heard those new 2.5 little engines
in the t-maxx are awesome...  I will keep you posted...

Remember this coming Sunday is the twice yearly big electric race. But
as I mentioned there will be tons of people there.

If you go ask for me by name.

If you want something easy and fun, go for a T-Maxx or a Savage.  Both
are pretty bullet-proof and easy to drive.  They handle rough terrain
very well.  Both are under $400.

If you want a little more of a driving challenge, a 1/8 scale buggy is
quicker, faster and handles better much.  There are several RTR buggies
out there that look half decent, such as the Hot Bodies Lightning RR RTR
(About $300) or the XTM X-Terminator RTR (About $329).

If you haven't had a gas car before, it would be a good idea to pair up
with a buddy that can help you out.  If you don't know anyone, make sure
you read and follow the directions.  Gas engines can be tricky at first.

Good luck

Brian

Brian thanks! Can you recommend a place to buy a t-maxx online? I checked
them out! They are cool!!!
BDM - 05 Mar 2004 13:44 GMT
You're welcome, Dan.  There is a great shop close to me that usually has
great prices as well.

www.ultimatehobbies.com

They have the T-Maxx for $379 and are offering free shipping for orders
over $50.

Not affiliated, just a fan.

Have fun!
