I was wondering if this truck would be a wise investment for me, since
I'm looking to get back into the monster truck scene.  Im no newbie to
RC, but I dont know what to think of this truck since it sooo long to
come out!  I love associated and have almost every one of their cars,
but I dont know about this one.  Before it came out, I was going to
buy a Savage 25 or an Ofna Titan, but now I dont know.
Anyone who's drove this beast and any other monster trucks please give
your opinion.
Thanks ahead of time,
-Zach

I bought a MGT a few weeks ago and have to say its super. Of all the
cars/trucks I have ever used this starts and runs the best and I have done
almost no tuning at all. I love the drill start! It turns very tight even
right outta the box. Has fanastic high speed, more than is usable really.
And jumps like a pro. Only broken part so far has been front bumper @ about
$6.00. And that was from a friend who did an 8 footer off a snowbank and
released throttle when airborne so she did a lip stand on  pavement! ouch!

Savage is a nice rig though and certainly has more hops ups so far.

They just did a comparison of the MGT to the TMAXX in the latest issue
of Radio Control Nitro (May 2004).  The trucks were very neck-in-neck in
each of the categories.  Based on what they compared, they gave the
smallest of edges to the TMAXX, but didn't say anything bad about the
MGT.  I have had many associated cars over the years and have always
been extremely pleased with them.  I don't think you can really go wrong
with the MGT.  However, I just bought a TMAXX yesterday because I found
a great price and this truck has been tried and true for some time.
Many replacement parts available, many hop-ups and people with
experience with it already.  I'm looking to have some fun in just a few
days.

Do any of the magazines ever say anything bad about any RC product they
review ever?

IIRC even the Dynamite Rocket Racer got a "great" review.

I know!  I have never heard of a car magazine ripping a car apart,
even in comparisons, when the car is a horrible car and they know it.
It seems like they (car magazines) always find something good to say,
and a few bad things, which they do for every car.  This seems to make
the reviews kind of unfair to the really good cars, and the really bad
cars.
Just my opinion

...

Steve Pond (former editor of RCCA) got mad at me once for posting this
observation to a web forum.

However, I can see where he is coming from. It would be easy to be
cynical and say that the magazine authors are going wherever the
advertisers tell them to. But, I don't think that's true. For the most
part, RC journalists want to pump up the hobby, and they don't like to
write negative things. They don't want kids or parents to open the
magazine at the newsstand and get a negative impression of the
products for sale at the local hobby shop.

And, let's face it, some RC cars with lots of problems out-of-the-box
are pretty good vehicles, once you master wrenching and
upgrading. Likewise, some cars with a fantastic out-of-the-box
experience (e.g., think of the Compagnucci 1/8th scale gas racers from
a couple of years back) never went anywhere and disappeared
quietly. So a straight review of the shrinkwrapped product may not
tell you the whole story anyway.

The mags are dependant on the manufacurers for free demo models and
advertising revenue.  They are loathe to bite the hand that feeds
them.

You've got to read between the lines a bit.  And if you can catch a
magazine editor/writer at the bar after midnite you can usually get
them to talk...

I actually found this newsgroup (and a couple others) to be more
informative than any mag. When looking into buying gear or
troubleshooting, I always look through the old postings to find info.
The info here is from the trenches and most anything I am going to
experience would have already happened to someone else. Or, someone can
give a truer recommendation on a product.  KUDOS to all... *golf clap*

I've had my MGT for a month or so now and am a little disappointed in the
truck. It looks awsome and seems to run very well. However, first time out I
broke the front bumper and extensions off. About $20 to fix incl shipping.
Next time out I broke a lower suspension arm, no idea how it broke....
didn't hit anything at all. Just notciced it during the after run clean up.
Now I am outta commision cause the LHS does not stock parts. So I have to
wait a couple of weeks for some suspension arms and pay another $20 or so
with shipping. Hope this isn't what my summer will be like. Run one tank of
gas and wait 2 weeks for parts before my next tank.... sigh....

I'd go aluminum but prices are much higher and am hoping that these were
freak breakages. Other than this I love the truck. I love the drill start,
very nice indeed. Besides the pull starter is useless in the this machine, I
ground a 3/4" groove into my beautiful lexan body in only three pulls!!
Damn, why didn't I walk back and get the drill starter!?

I was just wondering what you hit with your truck.  I know the truck
is huge, but honestly, Associated always makes their stuff to be able
to take a pounding.  Sorry for asking and picking your experiences,
but this isnt really a light purchase.  Also, I and wondering what
yall think of the losi truck.  I dont like the huge shocks because of
bad experiences with 1/8 scale shocks.  Also, losi is too performance
minded, and they always break, compared to Associated (just look at
the Steath tranny)

My MGT was damaged by a friend driving off a 5' snowbank, he came off the
bank and then let off the gas. The truck nosed over and fell way more than
6' directly onto pavement at quite a good speed. That's how the front bumper
was broken, I also now suspect that the lower arm was broken at the same
time but I somehow missed it in the cleanup. Something had to break in that
nose dive so I am lucky it was so cheap!

Again, I love the truck and let me tell you that not only is this thing is
fast but much more important to me is the drivability of this rig. It goes
where its pointed and will run rings around a TMaxx, even with my very
limited experience. I can run circles around a much more experinced driver
at the local track. Yep, he's a bit faster on a paved lot but my 25% more
weight makes my truck the one to have for staying planted and pointer where
I want it. The TMaxx seems too eerrrr... squirrelly if you ask me. Lots of
work to keep it in any direction!
