I have had problems in the past with my ISP's news server, but it SEEMS
to be working okay now. But the average new message count seems to be
around 25 to 30. Am I missing a lot of messages? I can remember when
this group had well over a hundred messages a day.
Or is the group dying?

newsgroups ebb and flow. summer is dead all over usenet.
when people are forced back inside, they'll be back.

I typically get around 50+ in a 24 hour span, sometimes more, but then
it might be that there are not many (as mentioned). Your ISP may not
keeping them around long thus you may miss some of them. An old ISP I
had did that as they had limited HD space. Try looking at:
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.models.scale
http://news-reader.org/rec.models.scale/
and see if you've missed any.

I'm only seeing 30-50 per day and my server's settings haven't changed
in years, so I can only speculate traffic's waaaay down. But, it has
been for a good long time now...
