I believe this is simply the "hump" that runs along the spine of the
aircraft, both on top, and bottom. I have seen photos and/or
illustrations, that show these "humps" to be painted white at some
point. Plus, remember that there was more than one X-1 (three, I
believe); and that their paint schemes changed over the course of
their careers. For example, the "Glamorous Glennis" script obviously
did not exist until Yeager was assigned to the project.

Hard to tell what this is. It "looks" like the orange paint peeling
away...but that assumes that it was primed in white underneath.
Note also the absence of the Bell Aircraft logo script. On Yeager's
"Glamorous Glennis" version, this logo was on the left side nose,
extending to just beyond the front of the canopy framing. This
illustrates the aforementioned variations in paint jobs, and/or
differences between the three X-1's.

In the book "The Quest for Mach 1", page 49, it shows them fueling the X-1
and there is most definitely frost on that area.

These 'humps' are cable ducts for wiring, piping, and control runs. Both the
upper & lower were painted white, along with the verticle fin, when I saw 6062
at NASM.
