I understand that the basic difference between the F4F-4 and the FM-1 was,
other where it was made, the deletion of the outer pair of guns from the
wings.
Is this right or is there more?

While not the definitive reference,Wildcat in action shows those as the
only differences. It also states that the first ten had the 6 gun
armament.

Why on earth did they remove the outer gun on each wing?

IIRC they removed the outer guns as a weight saving measure, after pilot
complaints. But they did increase the amount of ammo.

Yes, many pilots who reached ace status flying the four gun dash 3
complained about the weight and short ammo on the six gun dash 4.

The British wanted six guns on their imports to bring down the Kondors
doing long range recon and bombing. Since they were at war, they were
assumed to know more than the USN, but no USN pilot who flew in 1942-3
wanted the extra guns--they wanted the extra bursts and the light
weight. When your opposition is Zeros, no wonder.

If I remember correctly the F4F project was handed over to GM because
Grumman needed the room for F6F production. The F4F was kept in
production because it was ideal for use from jeep carriers. A lot of
the jeep carriers were invloved in sub hunting and the extra gun pair
was left off as unnecessary for the job.

Thanks for the info guys. To be honest, I had the impression that all of
our fighters in the Pacific had 6 guns. But to be honest, my interest in
WW2 has been more towards the ETO.
