I recently got a Minicraft model of a Yak-1 in German Luftwaffe
colors. From what info I could find, I understand a soviet pilot
defected, giving the nazis a Yak-1 in perfect shape. I understand they
also used it. What I'm wondering is: was there a swastika on the tail?
The kit doesn't have it, but that's not surprising. There is a marking
on the tail, which could be a painted-over swastika. It also has a
yellow ban around the fuselage, if that's any help.

I'd bet the whole underside was yellow as that's what I've seen on other
captured Allied aircraft. The Germans painted swastikas on P-47s,
Fiats, Dewoitines and B-17s (among others) so I can't see why they
didn't put one on the Yak.

You mean what treatment he received from the Germans, or later from
the Soviets when they took him back again? Ugh... talk about bad
decision! What I would have done (aha, genius in disguise) is fight
bravely against my former comrades and then defect again, this time to
the West :-)
