At the local hobby store they have a kit that lets you make your own
molds for models and such.  Anybody have any info on this thing?  Is it
worth the money?  I think it's going for sixty dollars but on sale for
forty.

Thanks!

It's probably a set that allows you to make RTV rubber molds into which
you pour two-part, polyurethane to make replacement resin parts. These
can be glued only with cyanoacrylate glues (super glue) or epoxy, as
plastic cement does not affect urethane. It is a very smelly business,
and usually not worth it to make just one or two parts, but if there is
something you need a lot of, it can be worthwhile (say you need a lot
of identical bombs, or ammunition canisters, or perhaps you need to
duplicate a whole set of tires for a major vehicle conversion). Best to
pick up a book that covers the process. And of course, the aftermarket
resin kit manufacturers are using the same materials to produce kits
and conversion parts (though the more serious vendors also invest in a
spin casting machine to insure full pours into the molds and reduce air
bubbles).

Depends on which kit.  FSM has had two or three articles on resin
casting in the last couple of years- far more information than we could
provide with this newsgroup.

    Is it Hobby Lobby?

If it's the Alumilite set check their home page at
http://www.alumilite.com/default.cfm .

Yes, Hobbby Lobby has 2 levels of resin mold making kits, one basic and
an upgraded kit plus they stock replacement materials.
