I was quite surprised yesterday to see two of the remaining three
flying over Norfolk in formation

So *that's* what was making such a racket over my house! I'm surprised that
they could manage to get two serviceable at the same time. Last I heard they
were robbing parts from aircraft that had just returned to make the next one
serviceable. As soon as that aircraft returns, the same component gets
robbed again and replaced in the original aircraft!

Martin built two models of B-57 Canberra with greatly enlarged wings,
the B-57D and B-57F. Are these what you are thinking of?

The PR.9 had the most extended wing of any UK Canberra.

PR.9s had a different shape to the wing but it wasn't as long spanned as
the Martin builds. Off the top of my head I think the 9 had extended
chord between the engines and the fuselage.

It does, together with slightly extended and squared off wingtips and an
enlarged tailplane. The canopy is a fighter-style clamshell affair and the
engines are Rolls-Royce Avon 100s, the same engines as were in the
Lightning. It is very different indeed from the original Canberra!

FWIW The B-57F aircraft were, I believe, rebuilt earlier model aircraft
and they were done by General Dynamics, not Martin, which had closed
it's aircraft fabrication operation by that time.
Also, weren't the engine nacelles on the Canberra PR.9 somewhat
different that the earlier versions because of the use of later more
powerful Avons?

All 23 production airframes were built at the Short Brothers factory in
Belfast, but the design was by English Electric at Warton, like all the
other Canberras.
