depends on the motor. disele smoke is black and can be very
thick depending on the load on the engine.
gas motors can have white, gray or black smoke. white is
usually when it's cold or water is getting in the cylinders.
gray can be a slightly worn motor with some slop. black is
usually a warn out or just rebuilt motor. a lot also depends
on valves, rings, type, load and maintenance.
my dad said the tigers were belchers, the panthers sometimes
and the mkiv's even less. he said you caould always tell
where a german tank started in the morning by the cloud.
your mileage depends on engine wear....

Early tigers were smokers by my uncles account and I've seen old movies of
them smoking. I imagine it cleared up as they ran a wile but I would think
it would be enough to leave a black residue. I always add a healthy amount
of black to the exhaust area of my tigers. 2c

and diesels always smoke under load. when my flightline van
is hauling up a long hill pulling a heavy trailer, it
positively belches it out. watch a loaded 18 wheeler on a
hard hill. they also blow a cloud when the load is released.
