I read an article in which the author described how he achieved a
"mirror finish" in polishing the plastic for a bare metal paint scheme.
He mentioned that he used a Dremel tool with a cotton polishing tip.

The result looked great. What are the pros and cons of polishing, using
this method, compared to using a polishing compound and elbow grease?

Pros: Faster, easier on the elbows : )
Cons: It takes a lot of practise and a speed controller for your
Dremel. You could easily melt the plastic and ruin your model.
