There is a lady up in your end of Californy who builds car models.
Even with neuropathy she builds better cars than I ever did.  You can
find her stuff on E-bay under the name 'mustanggal', IIRC.  Jackie is
her first name.  More than that I wouldn't say.

BINGO!!!

Garage, in my case. After the attic gets insulation, flooring,
ventilation, pull down stairs and shelves they all go up there. That
leaves 7000+ aviation and modeling magazines and books in new cabinets
in the garage.

As far as "old farts" are concerned... I'll be 59 next month, but I
only feel that old on occasion.

It sure is nice to get back to building models again. :-)

Both 14x12 brms plus most of the walk-in attic. All this space and
everything is still a mess :-)

Hi All,

Dennis Loep, male, from Enschede in the east of the Netherlands, near the
German border.
36yo, so no old fart (yet). I CAN feel like one sometimes, but most of the
times I (like to) feel younger.

About 700+ 1/48 plane kits in storage. Plastic, resin, paper etc. Have
built some 50 over the years.
I live in a converted horse barn, so all the kits and work space is up in
the insulated hay loft. No basement, but still space left!!

Have worked in a model shop, a lubricating oil/grease producer and am now
working in civil construction, where I lead teams building concrete
structures on, under and above ground. Like overpasses, parking garages,
fly-overs, rail road bridges etc.

Cheers.

NEXT!!

So whats wrong with being an old fart who makes models...thought it was
part of the thing, train spotters have anoraks, we are old farts...well
46 actually

and yep..its the basement thats the modelling room/workshop, and like
most modellers working in the space that you cannot swing a cat round
in, never mind a 1/72nd B-52 (that might be why its now got its wings
on yet)

Old retired fart here. The whole basement is mine, except for the storage.
The women are all into the latest fad, Scrapbooking.
The kids are playing digital games on the computer and wouldn't know how
to glue two pieces together unless they could do it with a joystick or
keyboard.

Old fart in a one bedroom apartment with 400+ unbuilt kits. Used to be
700+ but sold some off. I may stop selling since it looks like I'm
gearing up to build once more. I'm hoping to finish my first aircraft
kit in 30 years by October and hopefully 4 if I can learn to do a
decent natural metal finish.

I don't know if I qualify as an old fart but I am not a kid either.  I
still work full time running a
fairly large industrial supply company (primarily fasteners) in
Colorado.  I resumed building models a little more than a year ago
after more than 20 years.  I build for relaxation and escape.  I buy
mostly to build but I do have 25 or so kits that will remain as sealed
box "investments".  I have a nice setup for winter building in our 4th
level and, in good weather, I have a table set up in our patio room
where I look out on a pond / waterfall and enjoy the birds, fish, and
the sound of the water running from the waterfalls down the stream and
into the pond while I build.  All together it is a nice escape from the
stress of the work day.

Sell some off. That's what I have to start doing so I don't leave a huge
mess for my heir to have to dispose of. Who out there is a good contact
to sell off a collection? Rare plane detective??

"old farts filling their basements with stuff". Well I guess that
pretty well describes me. Actually I just turned 68 and have been model
building since I was about 8 or 9. I build models in the Fall and Winter
and compete in black powder rifle competition in the Spring and Summer.

I'm approaching old-fart-ness at 42, but I haven't been building any
models.  In my current residence I have absolutely no room to do
anything like that unfortunately.  I want to get back into building
models again and even have a couple of kits squirreled away but
unfortunately it all has to wait until I get into a house with some
room. <frown>

In the meantime I just browse forums like this, thinking about the
stuff that I would like to do once I'm in a position to do it. <g>

Thanks for the chuckle!

And speaking of old farts, what is the crossover fartdom age anyways?

In any case, I don't think that I qualify yet.

As for farts, I do it often. I'm a guy after all!
Oops... pardon me...

I live in the US and work in tech support for a large computer company.
My workshop is in a finshed room in the basement. I've been a modeler
since I was about 5 years old.  As far ar r.m.s. goes, I've been here
off-and-on since about 1998.

build on your pc desk. you really don't need a huge space.
my build surface is a round wire spool table i built. about
30" across.
Bruce Probst - 25 May 2006 23:55 GMT
>build on your pc desk. you really don't need a huge space.

Well, yeah, I could probably do that if all I wanted to do was *build*.
But I'd like to *paint* as well ... which means space for keeping
paints and painting gear (and no, I don't even have room to shove it
all in a box somewhere when I'm not using it) ... space for waiting for
paints to dry ... not to mention actually displaying the finished
product somewhere.  When I say "I have no spare room" I mean that quite
literally, I'm afraid.

It's OK; I'll cope.  It's annoying, but it will pass.  When spare room
comes my way again at some point, I'll get cracking!

I built a computer desk out of a musician's keboard stand and a 48"
table top I bought from Ikea.  It's modular, and also can be used as a
drafting board since I can tilt it.

Not quite an old fart yet (I hope) at 46. Started modelling again about 5
years ago and have made 59 1/72 models in that time. I have about 145 kits
in the stash in the garage (where my modelling is done). I share the garage
with 2 cars and 2 dogs.

My wife and I build, I'm 42 shes 21 (the second time around) ;>  we
have a 1000 sq ft trailer and we use the middle room. It's about 7x8
or so and we built two benches (had to assemble them in the room) on
either wall and put up shelves above them.  She does rockets and RCM
planes I do the regular plastic models and love to spare part build.
(not just kit bashing,  I take anything I can find, spark plugs, old
hard drive insides, mouthwash bottle, when she was in the hospital
they let me take home her iv set, old primers, parts of her infusion
set (she is a 32yr diabetic) etc and make stuff out of them.  I
haven't seen or heard of anyone else that dose what I call "spare part
model building", just kit bashing,  oh well.  It dosen't take a lot of
space to bulid and have fun.

Will turn #@%&* this November, and retired last November.  However, I do
not consider myself an OF.  No basement here in Texas, so the stash is in
the garage, some 300 models of which about 50 percent are in some state of
completion.

There are two husband and wife teams in the club I belong to.  They (the
ladies) do build some very good contest quality models.

The wife and I share one of the bedrooms for her arts/crafts and my
modeling.  I am working on a mobile workbench so I can work on models and
watch TV at once - or at least try - then roll it away when I am not
working on models (will post some pics on abms when I get it completed -
about another week).

Cheers,

Unique, hell!  You're perverted...a monster...a threat to all we
procrastinators hold dear.  How do I tell my wife that "*everyboby* in this
hobby buys more kits than they build" when you publicly flaunt your
self-discipline?

Wait a minute...didn't I see you in a starring role in the latest X-Men
movie released today?  Yeah...that's right - Kit Builder - the most
dangerous of all the mutants!  His kit stash morphs into built kits!

May the Saints preserve us!
