yes, but how much too much?

I'll guess triple digits. It would be cheaper and better to build their
own vac machine at that rate.

i'm guessing right around $300. it has all the junk, so a
serious toy collector will probably grab it. looks to be in
really excellent shape.
i always wanted one, i think they were on sale for 3-4 years
but somehow just never bought one. must have been buying
motorcycle parts.

I'm guessing this is an old Mattel.  I remember reading in "Scale
Modeler" that Sears had them in their catalogue even though they were
long gone from their stores.  I ran out and ordered one.  That should
say how long ago that was.
I haven't used mine in a while.  I think I made up a bunch of sheets
with just the one base that appeared corrugated.  I intended to use it
as sheathing on HO buildings.
At one time I used a bunch of the letters for a business name on a
building.  Looked pretty good but the building's disappeared since.

it could go berzerk as a collectible, but as a machine, it's already
gone too high. I bought mine for $20 couple years ago. ripped the pump
out to attach a real vacuum cleaner... never did finish adapting it.

Same here - I got 3 off of eBay for short money and started converting
one just like you tried.

And eBay seems to have at least few of those listed at any given time.
Nothing rare or expensive. What makes one rare is if it has all the
original packaging and plastic sheets. Those original sheets usually
fetch premium price.  So, this auction doesn't seem too out of the
ordinary.

Toy collectors like them in good condition - modelers couldn't care
less...

I found one at a garage sale about ten years ago, just the machine
itself and a couple dozen sheets of plastic.
Cost me 10¢
Used it once....

Unless you've bought it for the collector value, you're crazy!
