The Academy Tiger I is issued with interior details.  The roadwheel
set looks incorrect.

Has anyone kitbashed the Tamiya Tiger I (both the early as well as the
mid production versions) with the interior details parts from the
Academy kits?  Any corrections to look out for?

The wheels are fine, but the turret is a mess. It is symmetrical, when
the real turret should bulge out on the left side, and Academy also
places the cupola too far back and too close to the centerline. The
Tamiya and Dragon kits both feature accurate turrets, and Dragon also
includes the radiator and fan details inside the rear grills, gun
breech and turret seats inside the turret, as well as a full set of
photoetch and a metal barrel.
The interior is very simplified in the Academy kit, and is based on a
very early vehicle.  Internal stowage changed considerably in late
production models. All the kits feature tracks with solid center guide
teeth. The AFV Club workable set released last spring has the correct
hollow teeth, and is fairly inexpensive and easy to build (two parts
per link).

From your reply would your recommendation be to stay with the Academy
hull and running gear but use the Tamiya turret (plus Academy internal
parts) updated with available data on internal details for both the
hull and the turret?  I have both the Tamiya and the Academy kits in
my stash and don't want to spend any more money on aftermarket parts.

That would be one way to go, yes, and the cheapest for you since you
have both kits in hand. One small caveat--the earliest (1990) boxing of
the Tamiya late and mid-production Tigers also had the incorrect,
symmetrical turret shape. Reissues corrected this, but there is no
indication on the box (rather than tout the improvement, apparently
Tamiya preferred to pretend the error had never happened). Easy to
tell--just test fit the two halves together. From above, the corrected
turret bulges out noticeably on the left. Tamiya's early and initial
Tiger kits always had the correct turrets.
As for the hull, Academy also places the hull machine gun mount too
high on the glacis plate. It's bottom edge should touch the slope
plate. Not difficult to saw it off and reposition it. You may also want
to swipe some of the better exterior detail parts from the Tamiya hull.
Happy modeling!

Thanks.  I do have the latest Tamiya Tiger I (late production model)
Two kits.  Love those swap meets.
