None the less, I'm pretty sure it's the way the thing worked.
The Douglas SBD "Dauntless" utilized a similar arrangement.

The bomb crutch (cradle) was NOT a flimsy device - as can be seen in the
SBD photos. The bomb itself was supported only by the crutch.
