Hi Troops:

I keep hearing about this Paypal thing. As I understand it, it is a
means of sending money overseas where international money orders are not
convenient. Can someone fill me in on where I go to learn more??

Bill,

If you go to http://www.google.com/ and search for "PayPal," you'll get
lots of hits that describe both the company's services and their
critics' gripes.

It's pretty straightforward. With an account you can send or recieve money
pretty much anywhere. It is invaluble for things like a eBay.

The one thing to watch is the account type. A personnal account is free and
is fine for basic functions. But of course they want you upgrade to a
businesss/premier  account which incurs a fee to receive money.  I sell on
eBay and finally gave in to the premier account. Paypal is owned by eBay,
who promotes it heavily. The problem was; with a personnal account you
cannot accept payments made from credit cards, only bank accounts.  But on
eBay, it appears the buyer can indeed pay with a credit card.  Even though I
placed instructions on how to, and how not to pay, in my auctions, many
buyers did not bother to read or understand them. They would send credit
card payments through Paypal, which I could not accept, and the payment
process dragged out for weeks.  I fianlly gave in and upgraded to a premier
acccount. It does incur a fee to accept payments but the speed and ease make
it worthwhile.  Other than that, I have been very happy with Paypal.

Ditto - my precise experience with PayPal. Mine is basically a love-hate
relationship.
I love the convenience and the speed of payment, some of the other business
practices
- not so much.

IIRC, there is or was a cap on the freebie account and when you hit it
($1000?) you are
all but forced to move to a premier acct.

Ah yes, I had forgotten that. There is a cap and mine was less than $1000.
I never thought it would be a factor until I did unexpectedly well on eBay.
When the buyer promptly paid, I was told it exceeded my limit and I would
have to wait a month...
Or upgrade to a business/premier account.  That's when I gave in.  Still,
they provide a service and I pay for it.
