It was announced today that NO slot machine parlour will be built in
Gettysburg, Pa.  Whew!
I know there are some here who might want to know about this.

That's a good first step. But something has to be done to reduce the
carnival-midway atmosphere along Steinwehr Avenue. That really
detracts from the "hallowed ground."

I agree.  Many of the old historic buildings are lost in all the shops,
B&Bs, tour sales, etc, etc.

In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been
granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger.
I do not shrink from this responsibility -- I welcome it.

A lot of my fellow North-South Skirmish Association members have been
following this battle closely. I am considering moving to the Gettysburg
area myself, but not if it goes that route. I have seen what follows the
casinos, what I call the casino culture.
The main pusher for slots in Gettysburg was a Guy who runs a Harley
dealership in the area and owns some of the land where the casino was
proposed to be sited. I doubt he will give up, this battle probably
isn't over, just temporarily on hold. I get a laugh out of the people
who were citing the mantra Casinos means good jobs. What good jobs??
Scrubbing floors and swamping toilets? The good jobs in the casinos
require training and experience and the casino owners would bring in
their own people from outside for those jobs.

Amen to that.  Not only this Harley dealer but Tommy Gilbert and the
Adams County commissioners were pushing it.  Indeed, one of the
commissioners is calling for an investigation into how they got passed
over.  Apparently Lancaster County does not have the market cornered on
idiot commissioners.
The owner of the property is still planning on building a shopping
complex on site.  He wants to move some of the 'carnival' out of town.
