rcvd the old Revell 1/48 repop kit. this one offers a version for the
plane on board the Wasp in 1942. Calls for a grey fuselage. it comes
with decals with a rough blue roundel, is that supposed to make it
appear that it was hand painted or that the usual blue fuselage was
painted over
grey? most film I have seen of the Dauntless shows it as blue.
why grey for this period?
and for the bomb. are the cutouts just for the bomb dropping
mechanism for the kit or were the bombs used for the Dauntless
designed differently?

Standard USN aircraft colors in 1942 were Blue-Gray uppers and Light Gray
lowers. The Light Gray is virtually identical to FS 36440 Light Gull Gray.
Blue-Gray is a grayish-blue with some green in it. FS 35189 is a decent
approximation. It's available in Testors Model Master enamels and Polly
Scale acrylics; probably other brands as well.

'IF' it's the old Monogram 1/48th kit I think the indentations on the
bomb were there just for the swinging and dropping feature.
Some pre-war Navy schemes did not carry stars on the fuselage. Some had
two different sizes on the wings. Perhaps the 'raggedly painted' stars
are there to represent hastily repainted markings. I'd check some photo
references if the instructions are too quiet on the subject.

its the same old kit I built in the early 1970's. the instructions
don't say squat about the different decals. from the design it looks
like the a/c was painted grey over the blue. not sure why that was
done if this was a 1942 version of the plane. but what the heck. its a
simple build in a weekend kit.... oh, and then I guess I have to fill
in the bomb indentations..

Regarding the roundel, that was a rather hasty repaint to cover up
the yellow circle used for Operation Torch. The SBD in question was
blue/gray over gray.
