i recently built one of the lindberg he 111's and they are a lot of fun. while
there are areas that are almost hysterically wrong and the scale is odd, you
can do a lot to make this look good. the 1/64 or 1/69 scale is an oddball
size, so corrections must be mostly scratched.
biggest bad is the guns, smae ones in the b-17 kit and i believe they are in
others. anyone recognize them? anyway, they look like a 50 cal. so you will
need to fab up some better guns. the wheels also look undesized. too small and
too skinny. the hubs are pretty plain and the spares box, (sent to me in trade
with the late and much missed al s. he sent me about 20lbs of spares!) found a
couple of acceptable size and shape.
one of the coolest things are the motors. they are seperate little kits in
themselves and sit under removable hatches. the hatches are too thick, so
grind them down and re-do the internal bracing. the motors need detailing to
look good. but the exhasut headers are bad. maybe you can make them round and
right, i didn't bother. i made some out of sprue and glue.
the front office is emptier than a teenagers head, so get out the spares. lots
of room to add whatever you like. since it looks most like an h model, you can
go nuts as to making it your variety. the canopy is split and clunky. vac one
if you can.
the motors have really cool grills but the mesh is like10x too big in scale. i
cut up one of those round brass mesh screens the hippies used for their arcane
religious ceremonies, i bought 100 years ago and they are swiss army knife
usefull.
you can buy the kit alone, but the history series has 2 p-47's that seem to be
in 1/72 along with the 111, paints, glue and a brush, even. i bought 6 for $50
from a hard up vendor at a show. 4pm is prize hose time when they are packing
and if the show was slow......i've had vendors wave at a table full of kits
and say take it for $100 or even $50. usually the oddball table but sometimes
there are gems in the chaff.
you can have a lot of fun with lindberg kits. easy to bash and make look good.
the 111 is fun.

I agree,I've built as many of the old lindberg kits as I can find.I
did the He111 a few years ago in a prewar splinter scheme. Not entirely
accurate but considering the kit and scale it was loads of fun.

i find those kits in strange places. i always grab those 1/72 german kits and
build them by the shitload. i've already mentioned doing the first 15 versuchs
number ar 234 and about 15 different paint schemes for the me 163. if i can
find a wright field model, i'll build that.
the shapes are right, the price is right and i don't have the snobatude that
it has to have cost 60 bucks plus 200 for add-ons. those are fun, but building
7 do 335's in a weekend and painting them the next is a blast.
i've got them little lindberg kits all over the house. when i'm sick of them,
i build a dozen more with different schemes.
sure, build for shows, but f.ck, build for fun...
happy new year!

You basically just wrote my own modeling bio! :)

Are those P-47s Razorbacks? Lindberg did release 1/72 P-47Bs. The
fuselage is just a bit shorter than the 'D'. The landing gear aren't
too great but can be sourced from another, better kit.
They also had bubbletops in +/- 1/96 scale. They used to come in flat
boxes with a window and ran around 29¢ back in the '60s.

yup, they sure are. neat little kits. no cockpit detail, of course.
as you say, the gear is a bit weak. they do come with rails and bombs and the
bombs look ok.
i could spare you one, if you wish.
i also got one of the odd scale betty/hellcat boxings. i think the cats are
1/72 and the betty 1/64 or 1/69.
the hellcats are similar construction to the 47's. i have one started.
the betty will wait until i have more practice. as you know, it's a honker and
i want to detail it.
toss me some email.

IMHO their 1/72 OS2U is the best 1/72 Kingfisher on the market. Again,
IMHO it's leaps and bounds better than the Airfix kit.
