Makes sense to me.  One of my favorite aircraft subjects ... the T-38
Talon ... no matter how they paint it, White, Black, Two-tone camo,
Wrap around camo ... the wheel wells and landing gear are always
white.

That was one of the reasons IIRC.
Another is  probably that it's easier to see around in them in low light
conditions while doing repairs.
