Scammel color question

I am finishing up the Airfix Scammel and have a bit of a conundrum.

Airfix suggests Dark Earth Brown #26 for the North African color and the same
with Dark Green for Northern Europe.

I have a reference that says vehicles were shipped to North Africa in Dark
Earth Brown and repainted Sand in the prep shops. The picture on the box shows
it in the same color as the vehicle being transported, clearly Sand.

What say the gurus of such details. I would think just overall sand for North
Africa.

I have a Crusader, Matidas and a Churchill to put on it. The Crusader is the
likely candidate right now. Certainly a nice looking kit, but fiddly in
places, instructions are typically vague and the molds could use a clean up.
