Did we ever find out if the Russians differentiated between the Backfire-B
and -C with their own designations?

Not sure what you mean by their own designations, but the two aircraft were
known as the Tu-22M2 and Tu-22M3.  The Tupolev in-house designations were
Izdelye 45-02 and 45-03.
