hill4448@gmail.com - 28 Jan 2010 14:15 GMT WHY is it! I can't buy an injected molded version of the C-141 Starlifter in any model, but I can buy an Amodel Il-76 in so many versions that it makes your head spin? Granted, they may cost a few bucks ($200/per), but they are at least available!!!
WHY is it! I can't find a US tank correctly modeled for the Korean Conflict except from Korea and Japan!?!?!?!?
WHY is it! I am having such a hard damned timed trying to fill my collection of Korea/Vietnam aircraft and ground vehicles?!?!?! These seem to be fairly popular in the 'Eastern' and 'Asian' model comp- anies!
WHY is it! I can't find a single gol-danged kit of a HAWK, or NIKE, or Patriot, or ANYTHING ELSE that's air defense for the west in 1/72(ish) scale except for the M-163 and the Bloodhound for post- WWII ?!?!?!?!
I'm getting fairly well irritated by now. I've been a modeler since the mid '70's and have not yet been able to buy anything more than a Bloodhound, an M-163 (oops sorry forgot!), and the Bradly Line- backer and HMMWV Avenger in 1/72(6) scale.
Well, God, Show us what you're worth, and pro- duce these much needed kits in your own scale!
Since, everyone already knows, 1/72 (-ish) is GOD'S OWN SCALE!

> /end rant/ > > -ahill Don't worry, just start in on something you don't know a lot about. I've tried this and it works wonders. I don't suffer AMS as much this way. It's amazing when you work on a kit you know little about in real life. All of a sudden you are not counting rivets, or looking at improper shapes, you are MODELING !!! Thats whats important !
And Oh, BTW, try 1/48, or (gasp) 1/32, 1/35 scale sometime. You might find yourself happier for doing so :) (1/48 is the real mans scale)

Don Stauffer - 28 Jan 2010 15:41 GMT I blame it on my fellow modelers :-) I can understand that it is a big investment bringing out a new injection-molded kit. Seems like so many folks always buy that new version of the ME-109, while no one else but me wants to build an old Fokker airliner from the twenties :-(
Thank god for vacu-form (resin is too rich for my wallet).

Seems like so many > folks always buy that new version of the ME-109, while no one else but > me wants to build an old Fokker airliner from the twenties :-( Maybe our quality expectations these days are simply too high. I've started building older kits and adding very little to them. I'm currently working on the old Hasegawa 1/32 F6F, adding just a Verlinden cockpit set. I bought an old 1/32 Revell F4U on ebay the other day, again with a cockpit set but that's all. I'm truly enjoying the Hellcat build; not over-engineered by any means; reasonable parts count; decent fit. I expect the same of the Corsair, since I built that as a kid.
I've given up on high-priced kits. Trumpeter is the worst offender in my book because the quality of their kits generally doesn't justify the price (my opinion and experience of course). I want modelling to be fun again, and this is my path towards that end. To each his own, but I say to hell with $100+ masterpieces and go back to our childhood roots.

Over-engineering and stupidly high part count is a pain in the arse.

Claus Gustafsen - 29 Jan 2010 07:40 GMT Agree very much, the older cheeper kits can still be good modelling. And I don't mind cutting up the old cheap kits to try a conversion, but I'll not do that with a $100+ Trumpeter kit. The Trumpeter kits have some advantages and some disadvantages, and they seem to have more than one design department, take their Corsair with lots of parts but weak wingfolds and compare to their MiG 3 with very few parts, and no fiddely PE hinges. PCM, Hasegawa and Revell amongst others make new decent kits at decent prices - just look at the Revell Ju-88 in 1:32.
When tackeling the old Revell Corsair there are some issues, especially the wheels needs some help, they look like Twiggy on a diet. but it makes a nice model.

Yeah, I found a set of Lone Star resin wheels for the kit. The Corsair arrived yesterday by the way, and it really is very nice. It's in the original box that I remember as a kid; way cool.
Looking forward to that after the Hellcat.

David Young - 30 Jan 2010 22:21 GMT > ...crap...there's a conspiracy afoot to make me drag out my Revell Corsair. Do it man! It's a lovely kit; it really is. Just enjoy it; maybe put a resin cockpit in it if that's your thing. GreatModels has some Lone Star stuff for Revell's Corsair. Or just build it from the box; it'll still look good and you'll have some old-fashioned fun. I'm stoked...

Rufus - 30 Jan 2010 23:27 GMT >> ...crap...there's a conspiracy afoot to make me drag out my Revell Corsair. > [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > > -- david Actually, I have a Technics resin R-2800 engine, a couple of resin cockpit sets, Eduard etch, and a slew of other items I've forgotten about all in the box with it and waiting to go - I forget if I'd been considering scratch building a set of brass gear for it, or looking for a metal set...
...and then there's this just out -

...so now I'm up for converting it to a Birdcage.

...then there's the Avenger, P-38, numerous Me 109s, and more jets than I have space to remember.

Take a D.H.4 and convert it to a D.H.4A transport. You can go either the sort-of civil airliner from 1918 or a US Army version from 1922. The fuselages were a bit different, but it's a reasonably easy conversion in either 1:72 or 1:48. A REAL simple one would be to convert a D.H.4 into a D.H.4 mailplane. Lots a fun.

Instead, I just build more 1/144th stuff now. And, Mr. Hill, we did have two 1/200th C-141s (A+B) from Dragon back in the '80s and '90s. I sold mine unbuilt and still kick myself about that. Back in the '50s Revell had some of those missile kits you mentioned but they were usually 1/40th or something weirder.
