We have discussed a number of times how Usenet seems to be dying.  We
remember when this group had hundreds of messages a day.

I have concluded it is time to find web based groups.  I will hang
around for awhile, still, but find much more activity on the web.

I have tried the forums at the Fine Scale Modeler web site and am pretty
happy with them. I will continue with that site.

Are there other sites that folks can recommend, and why?

A good question. Google or not, it's still hard to find things. That's
why this used to be such a great place. You could find everything
here, planes, armor, sci-fi, ships etc. I'm sure there are a lot of
old hands that could use a list of "where & what" pointers.
I still miss the mon-key........ Got a B-10 in the stash.

Its true that RMS has sort of become that uncle the family does not
talk about, but it is still a source for info, off topic humour, etc.
that you may not find in the FSM or other group forums.
The reason I don't go to them much is that I forget about them. I have
20 or so google groups that I visit and find I like to putz around
them - easier to access, etc, don't need to remember passwords, etc...
the only other forum that I have posted on is hyperscale.     If
forums had an option where you could be notified that a response to
your query has been posted it would be a great help for me, otherwise
I'm probably gonna forget what I posted and where I posted it.

Web forums have their ups and downs. Downs include corruption of the
MySQL database for example :-) Or DDOS attacks. And speed. And page
rendering. And browser problems. And crappy styles, non-threading, and
other deficiencies of a particular forum design.

The ups are more features for those that value that sort of thing.

Personally I am happy with some forums like ModelWarships.com and the
wonderful resource at JAircraft.com, but others like SteelNavy are so
retarded that they are useless as forums unless you like to waste hours
of your time for little actual reading done.

I think Usenet still has lots of life in it, actually. And maybe someone
will figure out a good interface (better than Google groups) that will
permit easier interface. You know, things like News to Mail interfaces
are quite good and Usenet groups and mailing lists live together quite
well as a result.

I still miss the mailing list for SMML which is now a Yahoo group, hard
to follow and crappy mail format.

I still like the Usenet format. I use Xnews, text based and very fast. I am
subscribed to a number of Yahoo groups, but I don't read them much 'cuz the
threading is for the birds.

Steelnavy is OK, you need to develop a style for it. I open each thread that
I'm interested in in a new tab. Usually when I go there it's interesting
enough to make it worthwhile. I tried MW recently it was OK, I've done
Hyperscale. Ick.

I loathe yahoo groups - constantly got nag-o-grams about
my password, for no discernable reason.

Finally chucked the whole thing. Too big a pain in my

I'll visit Starship Modeller, but rarely, since they make

ModelWarship/SteelNavy I'll read for the reviews, that is

MW is my favourite web forum site, so I should at least put in my love
of it here :-) The forums are actually very informatative, especially
the "Calling all <ship, class, type> fans" threads where all information
on a particular ship, class or type are collected for reference. Very
nice for modeling since many folks put up detailed model shots,
historical photos or plans, and the like. Ever wanted to model an
accurate Vincennes or a Quincy from the 1/700 Trumpeter/Pitroad kits?
There you can find your answers.

IPMS USA now has a forum available to non-IPMS members. There is a
"Bullpen" forum available to only IPMS members that allows off-topic/
off color discussion.

Armorama is an active modeling forum as well. That website hosts other
non-Armorama forums and while they are integrated, they are also semi-
stand alone forums. If someone approached them to host RMS as a forum,
they would probably do it.

I mention the two forums above because they are multi-genre forums
like RMS is.

Me too - I have found that over 99 percent of the useful info has come from
Usenet, the forums are just too slow and difficult to navigate. Eventually
they'll set up formums that behave like Usenet, except you will have to
supply your personal details so they can mail-spam you.

I remember those good old days too.  I prefer the simplicity of this
RMS group and don't care to learn all those newfangled web page tricks
and password protected exclusive club memberships.  Maybe its just
me.  I like my privacy and do not give out personal details sought by
many subscriber groups for something as inconsequential as a hobby or
a shopping site.

I've been spending time in the Model Cars Magazine forums, and have been
pretty happy. Then again, I mostly model cars. Wouldn't be of use to
those of other (possibly inferior) persuasions. :-)

I like it here tho. Can anyone suggest a good, free news server? The
marketing bastards at Cox are turning off usenet support on June 30.

I am using TeraNews. Not free, because you have to pay

Drawbacks are that the "free" server(s) is(are) slow to

While not free (I pay $1.66/month by prepaying for a full year), I've
been happy with a "Mini" newsgroup account at Newsguy ...

   http://newsguy.com/overview.htm

I started out with the Basic account (at $5/month) but then switched
to the cheaper option once they started offering it since my meager
text usenet usage falls well within their 3GB/month mini account.

I fear I was misunderstood. My intent was not to leave this forum, but
to supplement it.  Some days there are only a couple of posts.  This is
not enough to supply my modeling fix.  The idea of web-based forums is
to SUPPLEMENT the messages from here.

I also intend to stay here to the last.  It is a nostalgia thing. I
figure I have been with this group for at least fifteen years, and was
the first modeling activity I indulged in on the net.

But, I need more!

One's I regularly frequent

StarShip Modeler - www.starhipmodeler.net - yes, you have to join to
see the threads, but John and Linda (the one's who run it) keep it
lean - mainly by not having any in-line pictures - links only - and
I've never recieved spam that could be traced back to them

And they keep a clean board - any attacks/spam/etc are flushed ASAP
and the offending party is banned

One thing to note:  SSM deals strictly with F&SF and Space subjects,
no Real World subjects unless it's Space Based (Apollo, Soyuz,
Shuttle, etc)

Hobby Talk - www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/ - More selection of subjects,
allows in-line pictures - fairly busy and quite a few SSM people pop
in there as well

Another closely moderated board, keeps the riff-raff at bay

Resin Illuminati - http://resinilluminati.com - more free-form than
the others, there's a special area for disagreements (flame wars) and
any topics that start crossing the line are split and placed down in
the appropriate area

Lots of inline pictures, and a number of SSM alumni are also here

All three of these also have insights to several companies

Hobby Talk has a Moebius topic, and Moebius people post in there about
upcoming projects

SSM has a resident Round 2 person (PhantomStranger) who also lets us
know upcoming things from them - even had a "hat draw" contest a few
months ago - anyone saying "yes" in the topic had their name tossed in
a hat, then the winner got a pre-sale copy of the 1000-scale Refit
Enterprise - a full month before it hit the store shelves

It's their site, payed for by their money, they can do what they want

I'm usually on www.whatifmodelers.com as What-If stuff is my main interest
and I get on well with the folk over there.
www.aircraftresourcecenter.com is one I browse through for the very wide
range of topics on everything from ships to tanks to dioramas to
(surprisingly!) aircraft of all eras.

I read this newsgroup via Teranews. Cheap at $3.95 for an unending
membership but the servers do drop out now and again.

I've tried most of them, and I really can't get used to the way they
feel. Same with the non-modelling forums I read, so maybe it's me. I
like the low-tech usenet presentation (no bloody passwords, for a
start), as well as the people who hang out here - shame we've lost so
many over the years.

Any chance of a roll-call of the 'old-timers'?

I was referring to 'age' as a measure of how long you'd been hanging

I think I've been hanging around since '97 or '98. I read about this
group in Scale Aircraft Monthly and insisted my son show me how to get
into newsgroups. We still had Rama Lamas and the Mon-kee when I started.
We also had occasional discussions of whether to split the group or not.

Ahhhhh that damn monkee.... I miss Dan, hope he is OK.
Got a B 10 kit around here somewhere, gonna have to build it someday

it was just that frustrating...)

al has a small shrine in my collection..it's centered around the 30lbs

I remember finding this place sometime around the end of 1996, but
basically as a lurker. I was at school at Ft. Leavenworth when I first
got internet access in '96. I joined AOL upon returning from Kansas,
found their scale modeling message board and migrated over to this
group. I've met a few of the guys I first came across in this
newsgroup like Pip Moss and Al Lafleche.

I see Dan occasionally at the local hobby shop in Louisville; when I
attend the club meetings, I always stop by. Although my attendance at
the meetings are few and far between.
