Congratulations Ken
A really nice and impressive effort - and really inspiring for me to
start mine
I guess I can tell you now there are some great an-22 pictures on :
http://www.airliners.net/search/
type "an 22" in the keywords field and replace the "in all fields"
drop down box with "aircraft" and hit enter, you get some 200
matchings - there are even some pictures of the camouflaged version
truth is I discovered this website only a few days ago - before you
lynch me :-)
thanks again for sharing your building experience with us, one of the
most interesting ones I have seen lately - and I have bookmarked your
page
kind regards
William

Molodyets!
Big respect for finishing that monster, Ken. Mine is still in the
unbuilt pile; I keep approaching it with trembling hands then my nerve
fails and I pull another 1/48 Hasgawa or Tamiya out the pile!

I've flown on this aircraft a few times and I think it is fair to say it is
one of the most uncomfortable and noisiest aircraft I have ever flown on. My
last flight on an AN22 was in 1996 and I swore never to get on it again.
Nice model, horrible aircraft in reality.

You mean it is worse than a C-130???

Other than open cockpit oil blowers *IS* anything worse than a C-130?

An-12 sets the discomfort standard in my experience.
It's the only aircraft I've ever seen with bilge in the bottom like a ship.

The loudest APU I have ever heard, to the point it is very very painful.
Very little sound proofing, multiple oil leaks, a collapsed undercarraige
and 12 hours sitting in a seat that had a sharp metal edge at a height that
was just in the middle of my back. Trust me a C130 has nothing on this and
thats without talking about the toilet. The crew welded the collapsed leg in
the down position and flew it from Sudan to Kiev like that. I on the other
hand flew KLM back to Europe.
The only cool thing about this aircraft is the bubble window on to of the
fuselage. You can stick your head in the bubble and get a great view.

25.3 hours in a C-124 with a clogged cockpit urinal!
2.6 hours in an RB-57 with a flatulent pilot!
Flying with my wife after she got her license, anytime, anywhere. She thought
she was a damned fighter pilot on speed!

What colour was the clogged urinal? Was it within govt. specs?

Bill asked:
>What colour was the clogged urinal? Was it within govt. specs?
The door was that gray-green fiberglass that Douglas used. I did not open the
door to verify urinal color, anyhow my FS595 chip book was back at Travis AFB.
We kept the top hatch open for 15 hours to kill the smell. My habit of building
models at the radio operator's desk (behind the nav seat) went "On Hold" for
that leg.

Something like the situation with the Lancaster then. People
praise it and get all mushy and romantic about it when in reality
it's an awful aircraft, Dangerous as hell too. Killed a lot of
friends and acquaintances of mine.
