(Angels singing) HALLELUJAH....HALLELUJAH..HALLELUJAH, HALLELUJAH...

I regret for what I said the last time. But finally I got it. Now, what
the hell is wrong with the u-boat.net? I went to it and it says This
Account Has Been Suspended... WHAT?

Well, I got what I wanted and I am gone to work. If I could get the next
one, I will make it as a R/C model. Now, here is another thing. Does
anyone have a picture of Otto Kretschmer and the U-99? I met him at one
time and he was a great gentleman.

Please help me on this if anyone could.

William

Bill... I'm sure you know this, but the U-99 was a Type VIIB, not VIIC. To
be strictly accurate, you'll have to take almost exactly 1cm out of the hull
length at the control room, and shorten the conning tower by the same
amount. I suspect the conning tower will be the most noticeable element,
since 1cm out of about 8cm will change the proportions significantly. The
other thing is that the earlier VIIBs had the AA machine gun on the deck
abaft the conning tower, rather than on a platform behind the bridge. I
don't know whether U-99 was one of these or not. If I can find a good
picture, I'll tell you!

Glad you got one -- I'm really enjoying putting mine together.

Best regards,
Matt

Thanks Matt. Now I need one more favor folks:

A 1/72 scale torpedo.... I thought about putting a torpedo that is
loaded in the tube. But I got an idea to do such that.

Drill out the torpedo holes before you insert them into the front
section. Then place a styrene tube on it and slide your torpedo into it.

Great idea ain't it?

William

I just got onto uboat.net - great site.  It's working for me.

Now that I have one, I know I'm going to have to build more than one of
these...

...I may have just talked myself into buying a third one...there's a
conversion article I've got bookmarked on converting teh Amati one into
a Type VIIC similar to U-505; with the dual-decked conning tower.
Debating now...anyway, I know I'll be in for a second one.

FYI, the U-boat at the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago is no longer
accessible. They are building an underground display area for it, where it
will be entirely enclosed from the weather (which apparently has done a real
number on it).

sad, i suppose funding was an issue? i couldn't even imagine
trying to put a value on that.
whatever happened to the type xx1 the brits pulled out of
the water a few years back? i believe it had been expended
as a target so was not a grave.

There's a Type IXC/40 in Birkenhead; apparently it's the only U-boat to be
raised after being sunk in combat, and it's actually owned by a Danish
publisher.  (http://www.historicwarships.org/u534/u534.htm)

i'm pretty sure this was a 21 salvaged by britian from a
target range at sea. it was the end of a history channel
show about underwater tech and showed the relatively
undamaged looking sub on a big barge. damn impressive
looking beast. had dual gun mounts on each end of the
conning tower and looked very sleek.
anyone help?

Yep, they have a piece of the outer hull in a temp. exhibit (along with
other artifacts, inc. an Enigma machie) with rust holes right through it!.

Way back when, after they cut those big holes in the sides (a travesty
of museum stewardship, IMO...) they sliced up the removed plating in to
small chunks, stamped "U-505" on them, and sold them in the gift shop.
I have one...somewhere...

Yes. In the mid 90's or so, there was a courtyard and
a food court in the area of the U-505 location. At the
time, you could leave the courtyard and walk around the U-505,
the Zephyr and a steam engine that was visible from the out-
side, but with no practical way to get close to it.

But, at the time, the U-505 showed the damage that time
had taked on the boat - lots of rust, hanging plates, numerous
   bird nests, etc.

I am glad to hear they are finally bringing the boat inside.
The Zephyr is already inside, I supposed the steam loco will
   also make it inside.

was that the 2 6 2?
boston's museum of science had a steam loco along side the
charles river locks, but after a very few years, the salt
air and climate forced it's move to inside storage.

: was that the 2 6 2?

It has been so long now, I don't recall what it was.
But, yes, it probably was around that size. "Tracks Ahead"
had an episode about the Zephyr going into its hole. No
mention was made about its yard mates, however.
