Can anyone share tips on how to remove the beautiful shell without destroying
it?  I need to remove the trucks and add a detailed interior.

Well, I don't have a VistaDome car.  The Boston and Maine never had
them.  But I do have a fair selection of IHC corrugated side streamline
cars.  All my cars have a roof/window glass assembly than can be
removed.  Turn the car over and on the bottom find 6 lugs from the
roof/window glass assembly which snap lock into the car body.  Use a
small common screw driver to unset the locking lugs and the roof/window
glass assembly will come free and can be worked up with gentle finger
pressure.

The IHC dome car I have has the shell attached in a different manner than
the usual floor lugs. It attaches by the window glazing at the car ends. To
remove the shell you have to insert a thin screw driver, or similar tool,
between the floor and the car end. Flex the end enough so that the glazing
comes clear of the window opening. It's a pretty tight fit and may be hard
to pull apart. Once you get the glazing slightly displaced the shell may
come right off. If it doesn't, slip the screw driver into the space above
the displaced glazing and pop the shell off.

Jim, I'd about decided that was the only way.  Thanks for the tip.

Mine's nicely painted for Frisco.  Frisco never bought any domes even though
they had clearance and beautiful scenery.

But it's my railroad and I'm CEO.  We've got domes.

Thanks again,

Doug
