It appears motorists in Odessa Texas have given up being hit by trains and
are now just driving right into them.

Paul,
Don't be too quick to judge the folks in Odessa. Way back I operated a
bunch of wells in a nasty place called the Sand Hills just south of a junk
pile know as Jal, New Mexico. I got to spend quite a bit of time in near by
Odessa because it was the closest place I could get a hotel or an apartment
to stay in that was only somewhat roach infested, had warm to hot water or
had an air conditioner instead of a swamp cooler. Midland was a little
further and was larger than Odessa so it sucked even bigger. I knew that I
wouldn't spend my whole life out there but if I had to I might just have
driven into a train myself. Bruce

Not to single Bruce out, but I will anyway. 8^)

Why do people keep responding to me as "Paul"? My reply to address says
"Brian Paul Ehni", and my signature block even omits "Paul". If I hadn't
read the whole message, I wouldn't have even known it was addressed to me.

You're correct. Honorable Mention, perhaps.

Perhaps he thought he could turn his car into a convertible, or else
think the underbody of the freight car was high enough for him to drive
underneath ??

I recall seeing with my own eyes a Lotus Europa drive UNDER one of those
monster DOWX tanks cars with dual trucks at each end.

For those who've never seen a Europa, you don't get into it so much as put
it on.

Me, too. Saw one on the showroom floor in Houston, TX. Bright lemon yellow
with black leather interior.

What I got was an MGB-GT, so that was OK, too.

From "dream" to "OK" pretty much sums up the
relationship between the lowered bread van and the
pregnant Spridget.

I can vouch for that. I had one and it was an even tighter fit
then my old XKE Jaguar. The only tighter car I met was the tiny honda
GT which was too small for me to get my 6' into though my 4' 10" Wife
loved it as it fit her perfectly. alas I fear i could no longer get
into any of those lovely old sports machines as they seem to have
shrunken over the years (I can not have become larger. That is not
possible)

Back in my grease monkey days, I had the opportunity to work on a
Europa.  I found I had to take my shoes off to test drive it, as the
pedals were too close together for my boots to work only one at a
time...

That's nothing. I had the same problem with my brother's 1973 Corolla.

The Europa was really a racing car that barely qualified to be driven on
the street.  You don't drive with boots but with racing shoes<VBG>.  I
remember seeing quite a few (Gary Player specials ???)
Similar to the Ford GP40 (?).  It was supposed to be illegal in CA but I
saw one with CA plates (somebody knew somebody).

Someone should have told the owners not to leave the vehicles out in the rain -
they will shrink when wet.

I can drive my Triumph Spitfire under semi-trailers. Parked only, of course! I
have to duck, as the top of my head is the highest point in the car! Can also
drive under most parking garage gates - very handy.... :-)

I had one of them many years ago. A fun car.

Back in the old days ('20s to '40s) this was a common form of
accident.  Unmarked crossings or ones with just a crossbuck didn't
give a motorist much warning at night and a freight train in those
days had no reflectors.  As a result it was quite easy to drive into a
freight train at night without suspecting until the last minute that
one was there.

OTOH anyone driving around crossing gates is attempting suicide.
