During the 1950s, did the ATSF railway run their SW-series switchers with
the hood or the cab forwards?  I have a photo taken in the 1970s which seems
to be showing an SW8 running cab-forward, but I'm not sure if this was the
case in the 1950s.  I would appreciate any information with regards to this.

SW-X were  _switchers_ -- so although there was a "preferred"
orientation, the RRs ran them both ways.

I've seen SW's running in pairs in the NS yard in Cincinnati, with the
cabs on the outside... I suspect because it gives better visibility.

Long hood end forward on all EMD switchers.  Generally, any time the loco if running
forward in North America, the engineer is sitting on the right side. On locos
equipped with dual control stands, one end of the machine will be designated as the
front. This does not apply to Santa Fe as their switchers did not have dual control
stands.

It'd be interesting if there are any real railroaders who can comment
on if there were any cooling problems associated with running EMD SWs
cab forward for an extended period of time?
